scoutm Report post Posted October 12, 2009 So here's the situation... You were fortunate enough to draw a December tag You've hunted the unit in the past You've scouted the unit a number of times already this year You find a big buck - unfortunately he's close to the road so anyone could find him without too much effort There's three hunts in the unit before December You have at least two more scouting trips between now and your hunt You also have friends that have tags in the same unit before your hunt Due to the water situation it's unlikely he will go too far What do you do? Help a friend hang a tag on it? Hope he makes it to December and hunt him? If you don't know if he's been killed how long would you look for him during your December hunt before you move onto a different deer?

Birddog Report post Posted October 12, 2009 Help a friend out! I have very few friends but I would give that deer up in a heart beat to anyone of them and I know they would do the same for me. That being said keep scouting and have a back up plan.
BML Report post Posted October 12, 2009 Big bucks don't get BIG by being stupid. Just because he hangs out near a road doesn't mean he is going to get whacked right away. He probably has lived his whole life in the same area and has lived through many hunts so far. If it were me, I would help a buddy out. That sort of thing goes a long way, IMO. Red Rabbit Report post Posted October 12, 2009 Larry, I guess scouting between the last Nov hunt and your Dec hunt will reveal if he is still around. You could scout/camp on him during the other hunts and see if other hunters are in the area and listen for booms. Check your bumper for GPS transponders. Snapshot Report post Posted October 12, 2009 If I was abolutely sure the buck would not make it to December, I would try and help a buddy get that buck. Better a friend taking it than a stranger!

jakehaffey Report post Posted October 12, 2009 I would help a friend. You should be able to find a nice buck on a december hunt if you put in the time. Just how big is the buck though?
Guest 300ultramag. Report post Posted October 12, 2009 Ok I am not into fairytales and can safely say "he will still be there". I am very realistic and there is a chance someone will find him... but, I had 4 good bucks pinned for 3 years straight... and this past jan. a new buck showed up out of nowhere dwarfing all of the other big bucks.. Ill break it down Can he be harvested prior to your hunt... yes Is he the biggest buck in that whole area... most likely not Is it possible that new bucks will be seen on your hunt .... yes do you have the best tag for the given situation... yes You have a good tag with a great growth year and even greater weather... I wouldnt obssess over one buck.. You have THE tag.. dont stress it man... just make the shot when presented. That is your only worry.. youll find a biggun. good luck!
