joeybari Report post Posted October 12, 2009 I got dish network hooked up this weekend and of course I tuned into verses and the out door channel not sure if that was what it was call but anyway I was watching some of there hunting shows (Saturday and Sunday morning before football). At first I was enjoying the shows, flipping through each cannel picking the ones that I thought I would like well a couple of hours into my viewing I was kind of up set. First of all 85% of the shows were on a managed ranch were if you want to hunt there it would couple thousand dollars... The ranch manager practically handed the animal on a silver platter. Then the best part of it all the host of the show want on saying that it was a hard hunt bcs they were their of a couple of days and they were not sure which size animal to kill and they walk about 1 mile from the truck. Are you kidding me that not hunting that’s paying to go out a kill something. The best part was when the hunter went over the size of the animal and the great looking antlers saying that it was the biggest game and so on and so on and right behind him is this big feeder. Did I mention that it was a gated ranch. Not to mention all the gear that these guys are using don’t get me wrong you need gear for Coues deer hunts (binos, good scope, rang finder, gps what ever ) but this guy had it all never even took out some of the stuff that he had LOL. Tons of shows were like that .There was one or two shows that I did see that the hunter went out and scouted on there own did the work and ended up with a nice animal. Am I going about this wrong? What do you think ?.
Coues79 Report post Posted October 12, 2009 The type of hunting that we do for coues deer is quite different than other types of deer hunting from Texas-east. Simply too thick of cover, and lots of flat, flat land, not to mention lots of privately owned country. While I was in Alabama for a couple years, you had to either brave going into scarcely public land with tons and tons and tons of other hunters, or, pay your dues to hunt on a leased out section of land, or, be part of a hunting club that had access to private land. It's a different type of hunting. I am glad that we have the opportunity to hunt the ways that we do here in AZ. Lot's of public land with the ability to get away from crowds of people if you are willing to do some walking. I'm not too interested in the type of hunting that you described, but for some, that's all the opportunity they can get. I imagine if that's all I had, I would be out there doing the same thing. I'm just glad I don't have to
AZantlerhead Report post Posted October 12, 2009 I've ben watching those channels for a long time and I too was in disbelief of where and how some people get their quarry. Allot of good knowledge and tips in those shows kept me watching though. After maybe 1000 of those shows I've come too this... Just as there are all walks of hunters and how they hunt, there is the same diversity in the hunting shows. Take it with a grain of salt, I'm just happy the anti's haven't ben able to ban the shows and channels. Fair Chase is different in everyones minds, that will never change !!!!. All we can hope is that we back eachother knowing we are all after the same goal of spending time outdoors and filling our tag and freezer, then maybe some antlers for the wall and some great memories regardless of a kill or not. We are blessed to live in AZ where we actually have public land and aren't forced to hunt in ranches, pay leases and kill only certain animals our guide instructs us too ( just to be able to huntaround home). Yes some of those hunts are more like shopping then hunting but ohh well, to each his own. We all eat at KFC and get our beef from a grocery store too. Anyone that's totally against the "easy" hunts and believe they should be illegal needs to kill there own "Free range" chickens and own a cattle ranch/lease to " hunt" there own beef, & make a trip to the sea and catch their own tuna as well. Different strokes for different folks, Yes it's shocking to see how "easy" some hunts are. But so is ordering a double cheesburger. I'll work hard for my venison though, but those are my standards. I catch myself shakeing my head sometimes too dureing those shows. Not to cry out" aww poor deer never had a chance" but just shakeing my head in amazement of how " easy" it is to kill a buck in some places versus others. Truth be told, allot of people would fold under the conditions of a " tuff" hunt or just not even attempt one. And guys like you and me will never be caught hunting a high fence ranch because of our PERSONAL standards. Again, too each his own, were all hunters, All after the number one goal of killing our game. However the guy next to me does it is up to him, And how/where I hunt is up too me. Blessed we are to have that right. Theres just no truly "fair" way to kill game, unless done with your bare hands!!!!! But we being humans that walk upright, have thumbs and use weapons, well that's why were on the top of the food chain I guess. To make hunting trully "fair" for the animals we would actually have to be a mountain lion, bear, bobcat, coyote etc. We have the advantage being humans period, as God Intented. So don't worry if other hunters put in max effort or the min, use a 1500 dollar compound or a yard sale recurve.. Our " Game" allready lost "the game" a long long time ago, I think in Genesis. I've ben rambling this whole time so I'll shut up now....
jakehaffey Report post Posted October 12, 2009 I agree, most shows are lame! Wouldn't it be nice if someone would sponsor for a show that had just coues hunters doing work. They could take video of all the hunters on coueswhitetail.com and I am sure there would be plenty of video from all of us. i know I would like to have my hunts filmed! curmudgen Report post Posted October 12, 2009 I remember last year when Peterson's magazine or some other sponsor put on a show about whitetail hunting and all they were able to get for their effort was edited down to half an hour of a hunter in a blind watching mostly does come in to a water hole. What we do is unique in the hunting world and is not easy to do or to film. We should just be thankful that all those hunters back east sitting in their blinds haven't discovered the challenge and fun we have and moved out here to compete for the tags that are available. It's almost time. I am getting axious. Let the fun begin. Jack

jakehaffey Report post Posted October 12, 2009 I have never seen a show with coues hunts. There are a few good videos though. How bout a coueswhitetail.com video!? From the hundreds of members with tags Im sure there is enough footage to be taken of people harvesting good bucks. I bet there are 50 people on here with a december tag, that should be about 10 good bucks right there!
joeybari Report post Posted October 13, 2009 i say lets keep it a secret who wants those "pros" screwing every thing up for us
Coues79 Report post Posted October 13, 2009 There have been a few shows that I have seen on coues deer. Don't remember the name AND they are few and far between. Some of the shows are a little bit ridiculous. I particularly cannot stand when they do set up shots, act like they are in the heat of the moment, act like they are glassing or whatever, then pull the trigger and act all gitty like they just killed somethin'. TOTALLY faked out the kill shot just to get some type of action. Or, when they have the camera set up right behind the deer that was killed, have Hunter Dan walking looking for blood, then, WOW, surprise, theres the buck. WOOHOO. The camera found him before I did. Some of them are ridiculous, but I have to admit, that I do enjoy watching some big ol' bruiser bucks get taken out. So, my vote is to keep them on TV, even the cheesy ones that I mentioned above. They're all trying to promote our passion, just some in different ways than we are used to.

Coues Archer Report post Posted October 13, 2009 All shows are like that now. people dont even know the definition of hunting now in days its all about money.
Coach Report post Posted October 13, 2009 Generally speaking, I HATE hunting shows. 30 minute infomercials hunting "pre-programmed" deer on private land, etc. I did catch one really good show once where Hank Parker's two sons came out to AZ having never hunted coues, and both were able to take bucks with their bows, spot and stalk. That was pretty impressive to me but really it came down to their guides. They made no bones about it, they couldn't have come here knowing nothing and accomplished what they did without that level of help, but I gotta give credit on that one. I'm as guilty as most, come the weekend flipping channels, I'm likely to watch a few of the programs. But I hardly ever really learn anything from them. You just don't get to see the hard parts of the hunts, the changing of strategy - heck, there's little strategy at all - it's either sit this tree stand or that one - neither of which were set up by the guy or gal hunting. And ultimately, they would have you believe that one particular piece of equipment made the hunt. The goal of those shows is to sell products, which is too bad. A show dedicated to actually teaching hunting techniques would be very popular, and useful, IMO.
joeybari Report post Posted October 13, 2009 +1 on all comments Your right most of the show are about the items and how it was the make or brake of the hunt I got no problems using gear that can help me with my hunt like a good set of binos, bow, rifle, tripod, so on so on, but to say that’s the reason the hunt was successful is BS. My dad is the best example of that. He’s been hunting for years and he uses a old 30-06 with 2x10 scope and binos that look like that have been used during WW1 I just about 6 years ago got him to use a tripod he wont change his stuff (and its not bcs of money) but as sure as the sun comes up in the morning he gets his game. He does with pure and I mean pure experience, knowledge, instinct and love for the hunt (I always screw with him telling him that its all luck).

I dont think there are too many other videos that are just coues. I think another good one is "Whitetails of the West". I have to check on that to make sure of the title though.
