flyphsr Report post Posted October 7, 2009 My daughter has a tag in unit 8 10/23-11/1 I hunted the archery season and took my first couse. I been seeing bucks just about every time I'm up there. I was just wondering if the weather gets real cold will the deer change their pattern.

Coach Report post Posted October 8, 2009 No expert here, but I don't think the weather will be a big factor. From what I've seen they stay "close to home" until pressure from hunters or other predators (or lack of water) forces them to change. From what I've seen, they actually LIKE cold weather. Ever find a coues bed in the snow? They don't even melt the snow where they lay for hours on end - their bodies are very efficient that way. Only enough snow to make foraging difficult would get 'em to move out, IMO.

.270 Report post Posted October 8, 2009 the deer live in the "weather" all the time. hot, cold, rainy, windy, snow, drought. they're always there. the only thing that really gets affected much by the weather is the hunters. a buncha snow might move em. heavy rain might bush em up for awhile. but they're still there. "you" just hafta adapt. Lark.
Hendo9 Report post Posted October 15, 2009 I took a Coues buck outta of Unit8 2nd weekedn of the hunt... The question IS" Does your daughter have a MULE DEER or COUES Permit? They range in different parts of this unit and weather does affect each of these species differently... Mule concentrate on the open country out near Devil Dog and Garland... Saw few 180+ in the Whitehorse area though... Coues.. stay along the canyons and forest pine/oak Mix just my opinion... from spendinmg hours upon hours in the unit...
