San Carlos Squirrels

Recommended Posts

A couple of years ago I introduced some of my lady hunting friends to squirrel hunting on San Carlos. Since then we try and get out every year. This year it was just Barbara and I, but we had a blast.

The weather was awesome and we had elk bugling around camp. Can life get better than enjoying a campfire-cooked ribeye while listening to elk bugling in the moonlit forest? Nice! Woke up to cloudy conditions and a really neat fog rolling in the forest. I really love fog!! It's always nice to see and smell the woods in the moist air. The multitude of flowers blooming throughout the forest added lots of color.

Anyway, we got into the squirrels and took several home. Also saw lots of turkey, some mearns quail and some mule deer while we were out.

Thanks Barbara for making this trip happen this year! You are one adventurous lady!

The squirrels were large and had GORGEOUS coats. Some pics:

Glad you had a good time with a good friend.

Those are some big squirrels.

Wish I knew you were going,

I would have asked if you would have saved me some pelts.

Barbara kept a few pelts, but I didn't keep mine. I certainly would have if I had known you wanted some GH. You want them for a full body mount (ie do they have to be perfectly skinned?) or do you want just some peices?

Let me know and I can save you some next time.

That Abert you are holding on the left looks fat and huge! Looks like a good time. I'm taking my girls out next Monday for squirrels.

You are right, he was huge!! This pic shows it a little better because the sun is hitting it. He was chasing a smaller female squirrel around and around a tree. It was the last thing he did....

I was thinking some to use as doilies for now

and then maybe next year when funds are better

I will get out and get a few for mounts.

so, does that mean just back peices would work or do you want everything (feet, tail, face and all)?

Back and tail maybe a little leg and tummy to give it some size.

Does not need to be neat.

Just split them, cut the legs where you normally would

and cut the head off as normal.

No fuss on the cuts ;)

Sounds and looks like ya all had a great time.

Hey you guys Amanda is needing a scope for her 10/22 she is thinking along the lines of a swaro or ziess in a 6-24x50.

I personally think she to get a Nightforce 6-24x50. Nightforce by far is the best. Oh ya she will be using the scope on her squirrel and other small game hunts.

Help Amanda decide what is right for her gun.

Those Aberts are shaping up nice now for winter with the rust-colored back and growing the ear tassles. With the season open till Dec 31 now, there could be some prime pelts for mounts. How did they taste? Acorny? Piney?
