36B first hunt

Recommended Posts

If anyone would like to share some good early hunt tactics for this unit would be great, We've done some homework on a new spot and found a place we're going to start out at that will hopefully get us into some bigger bucks and away from the pressure. If anyone is fimilar with the unit I have some some canyons/mnt ranges picked out and would love to hear some feedback. I will share info on what i know of the unit if anyone is up for a conversation. I've hunted this unit many time growing up but the haven't personally hunted it for 6-7 years now and the last couple time the family has been drawn we've bounced around through the unit. this year is the same thing trying a new area hoping to find that big boy stomping around.

Make sure to be out there well before the sun comes up. The bucks usually bed early. They then get up as the sun rotates so glassing at odd hours can be productive.

I have found the best luck is to actually glass in the shadows in the morning. This usually goes against the grain, but I have had decent success with this.

a lot of good spots 6 years ago are crap now. The illegals have made such huge dents in some areas that deer ust are not in some previous popular areas.

Whatever you do.....................

DON'T be skillfull, don't hunt hard, don't kill a monster, and don't even think of haveing any confidence in yourself and your ability, Don't wake up at 3:30am every day and trek back to camp with a flashlight as well, Don't glass untill your eyes pop out, Don't read the sign and find where the group of true big boys live, Don't fill your Coues tag , Don't use your boots instead of a quad, don't learn the area your in, Don't practice scent controll, Don't wait patiently where you know the big boys are living, Don't believe in Core Home Ranges of mature bucks, Don't pattern the animals to a tee, Don't put in 110% effort, Don't get away from the masses of hunters, Don't hunt hidden springs with large mature oak trees that drop millions of acorns in a 50 yd circle, Don't pay any attention to rub/sccape lines, Don't take serious heed to the largest coues tracks and droppings within 3 miles, ummmmmmmmm......... Don't hunt like your life depends on it, Don't ever believe you can get a monster , Don't read books and watch shows with content from Pro hunters, Don't research Coues deer for a year or two before you go after umm, Don't listen to hunters who actually have advice worth gold, Don't read topos, Don't shoot anything over 80 inches , Don't shoot deer in their vitals just aim for antlers, Don't reload and make a true shot if you miss at first, Don't sit/glass in the best spot within miles, Don't go above and beyond what 90% of hunters are willing to do, Don't find shed antlers to prove good genetics in the area, Don't use your common sense and good judjement, Don't put 100 miles on your boots in four days scouting, Don't believe for a second that you have any skill or knowledge when it comes to hunting, Don't ever believe you fill a tag and harvest a big one at that with anything besides pure luck, Don't put everything you have and then some into your hunt, Don't hunt where other people fear to go, Don't pay attention to

The endless advice of seasoned trophy hunters on this site, Don't spend hundreds of hours reading stories of how others were succefull, Don't go over stratagies for an hour each night relaying the days scouting and hunting learning curve and applying it to the following day, Don't hunt more than 2 miles from dirt roads and highways, Don't apply for high draw and low success rate hunts, Never hunt early seasons either, Don't pay attention to the weather, Don't hunt the thick nasty stuff where the big ones hide, Don't walk an hour and a half each way with flashlight to your glassing/shooting point, Don't try not disturbing the area your glassing from, Don't hunt like you've never hunted before, Don't spend the duration of your hunt in the field- camp is so much more relaxing, Don't pay attention to the stats in the Arizona trophy book, Don't have any dreams of tagging out or tagging a big one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because If you Do these things and tag out and maybe even tag a monster, there are hunters that have ben hunting coues for a long time that will get seriously offended and degrade your buck and your skills to make themselves feel better every chance they get, as well it will be noted that your nothin but a rookie coues hunter and " luck" is the real and only reason you had success and got a bigger one then they ever have or probly ever will.

Save yourself some heartache my friend and don't tag out this year or even think of getting a big one :( .

Keep this mind frame = you are nothin but a wet behind the ears coues hunting rookie who couldn't possibly know anything at all and your Coues buck will be nothin but pure Luck!!!!!!!!! Especially if he's big. You don't know squat and can't possibly be a good hunter no matter the effort and skills you might use!!!!!!!!! So tag soup would be the only option here if you wanna be a real coues hunter in some peoples eyes  .

Srry BigBFever, I have never ben that far south, But take the n't off of all those don't 's and that's what work for me. I would delete my little outburst but someone has quoted me and recommended their personal favorite E-pharmacy for some reason. To conquer Buck Fever?

Funny someone knows where to find that info................ Guess were all a little sick with Coues Fever around here.

GREAT POST, I know the feeling I've hunt Coues long enough to know what your talking about I have 3 buddies that are going out with me and their getting their first taste of the dedication of what it takes to fill the tag. This is the first years that I will be not pulling the trigger on an average deer *****Unless it comes down to the last day ;)****I still love those tasty steaks.........but again great post you summed up the experience of AZ whitetail hunting ..... theres nothing like it!!!!!

Yes BigBFever that about sums it up, even a rookie like me knows the basics. There in every good book, one just needs to apply them.
