W.O.T Report post Posted September 1, 2009 In the past I never really thought much about all the options/functions available to benefit me/my shot... as long as it had a cross and was magnified that was all I needed... but over the last several yrs I have realized optics are as important as being drawn for a tag!!! so, like the topic states, which one and why? firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted September 1, 2009 Zeiss. Because they blend great optics and a somewhat affordable price. When I worked at Sportsmans Warehouse, I sold more 3-9x40 Zeiss scope than anything. 95% of the time, if some one was coming in looking to spend about $300, I could talk them into the $100 more of the Zeiss due to the quality and fair price. My two main Coues rifles both have Zeiss on them. Both are 4.5-14 power, and both have turrets. I LOVE both scopes. Scoutm has also fallen in love with Zeiss, and I think I might have had a little bit to do with that, but not for sure.

loco4coues Report post Posted September 1, 2009 Leupold VII 6.5-18x40 with turrets. I like it because of the magnification, the turrets (dial it right it, no hold over), and the quality. I've had it for a few years now with no issues. Killed 3 deer and two elk through it. I also bought it through an employee discount program so I got a smokin' deal on it! SunDevil Report post Posted September 1, 2009 there are a lot of good scopes out there. if you are spending more than $500 you are probably going to be getting a decent one. probably one of the most important things to think about and be aware of is to make sure you get a scope that has turrets. these take most of the guess work out of hold over. W.O.T Report post Posted September 1, 2009 would one reticle be better then another if turrets are used? theres the bdc, which to me, seems to have too many variables, but the mil-dot and varmint reticles...??? yall like one more then the other for over 300yrd? scoutm Report post Posted September 1, 2009 +1 on the Zeiss Conquest. I have both the 4.5-14 x 44 and 50. I don't think the advantages of the 50 out weigh the extra cost and weight so I would recommend the 44mm. The 44mm doesn't come with turrets but you can easily fix that by sending it to Zeiss - they put them on for me for only around $50.00 - they work great!! Purchased them both from Doug @ cameraland and the savings from being a member covered the cost of the turrets. Great Scopes!!
Red Rabbit Report post Posted September 1, 2009 WOT, What kind of ranges, terrain will the scope be used in? On what rifle? Is the rifle to be carried in a scabbard? Do you want turrets or a ballistic plex reticle? What isyour budget? RR

W.O.T Report post Posted September 1, 2009 Well I have several rifles I may use it on, hopefully I can transfer the scope to the others as needed(coues to elk rifle)... shots out to 600yrds possibly, but more then likely 300-500. Cals range from 6mm, 270, 308, 300wsm...all rem700 actions and would be willing to keep it on either the low or hi cal rifles. As for budget? 1K max, would like to keep it under $700 if possible... it all depends on what I come across or what someone is willing to sell it for

With your price range the leupolds can not be beat
W.O.T Report post Posted September 1, 2009 ok larry, which scope did YOU buy?
Red Rabbit Report post Posted September 1, 2009 Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 Rapid-Z 800 for $750 after rebate. http://www.cameralandny.com/optics/zeiss.p...estrapidz521430 Does not have a big 50mm objective to require high scope rings that pulls your cheek off the stock. 4.5x would be magnification low enough for elk in the trees. 14x with the RZ 800 for longer shots in more open country. Sharper optics than Leupold, although the Leupold is a trimmer package. The Leupold VX3 4.5-14x40 w/ B&C reticle would be another good choice.
scoutm Report post Posted September 1, 2009 If the rebate applies to demo scopes you could save some additional money. I purchased demos and could not tell the difference. I would check with Doug (@cameraland) to see if the rebate would apply.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted September 1, 2009 Larry, the bottom of the coupon says for "new", but the terms and conditions on the zeiss website do not specifically say. www.zeiss.com/sports Doug
