NRS

Got one, grabbed it, lost it.

Here is a report from a friend that I went out calling coyotes with Saturday. It says it all!

Went out Saturday with (NRS), and tried our luck despite the extreme heat warnings. We did 4 stands. Called in 1 coyote on the second stand and nothing on the others. Here’s the story on the coyote. As soon as the e-caller started, other coyotes began howling at us. We howled back a few times then switched to puppy distress. A coyote arrived within 3 minutes and ran straight for the decoy. It smelled the decoy and took off. I yelled "STOP", but it just kept going. I shot and missed as it ran by me broadside about 30 yards away. The coyote looked like a 4 legged torpedo as it speeded up and headed straight for Darrell. Darrell then connected with a spectacular frontal chest shot using his 223 with the coyote running full blast right at him. The coyote piled up and did several cartwheels before it finally stopped rolling 145 feet DRT from Darrell. We continued calling hoping that another coyote would come in. About 20 minutes later, we stopped calling. Darrell and I then walked over to the coyote. As we both stood beside the coyote, I congratulated Darrell for making such a great shot. I then picked up the coyote by the hind leg and OH shoot. The coyote came back to life, its head flipped around, it jumped to its feet, and it took off running. This was bazaar! For 20 minutes, that coyote was motionless and never even twitched. When we approached, its eyes were closed and it did not appear to be breathing. Best guess is the coyote knocked itself out when it cart-wheeled several times then regained consciousness after I picked it up. Darrell tried shooting it again as it ran off, but missed 3 times. I had left my gun by the tree. We tried to track it down and were unsuccessful.

Here are photos showing the skid marks where the coyote piled up and the pool of blood it left behind. It got away after I got my hands on it....DANG IT!!!!

Animals don't die with their eyes closed. If you walk up on a "dead" animal and it's eyes are closed. Call me before you pick it up......so I can get it on video.

four legged torpedo ha ha ha

#1. if he's worth shootin once, he's worth shootin twice!

#2. 223 is fun, 243 is better, 7mm they don't get up ha ha ha. (and btw a 450 Marlin makes one into two)

Ha ha those little guys are tough sometimes. . . . its like they are too wild and crazy sometimes to understand they've been shot! I have seen similar things from them. . . walk over to the downed corpse and they spring to life Like a jolt of lightning jumped thru their bodies! Off they go . . . and off hand, . . . after seeing that, its hard to bring em back down again ha ha ha. . .

I saw this once when i was in Highschool. Except it was a deer. My friend shot one and his brother shot the second one I was just along for the glassing. They both walked up and set there rifles against a tree and went to work on my friends brothers buck. His little brother did not bring a knife. So my friend finished his brothers buck as fast as he could. The other buck was between the two of them and the little fork horn stood up. We all sat there looking at each other encluding the little buck like whos move is next. Both guns were about 15 feet away in front of the buck. It finaly decided it would get out of dodge. Just then my budy out of fear stuck that knife in the side of that half knocked out buck. the blade punched o hole in the lung and the buck expired just a few feet away from its first resting spot. He had barely grazed the antler and knocked the buck out.

I'm guessing southeast side south of the canal

Since it was my friends calling spot, I will just have to let you keep guessing.

If you want an area with lots of coyotes, go up to St Johns. I was out and about in that area this weekend and could have shot at least 3 with a pistol as they just strolled by with out any calling. ;)
