EdD270 Report post Posted August 21, 2009 Hello, I'm new to this board and new to coues hunting. I'm a native Arizonan who's wandered around during my career. Now I'm back and living in the Linden area, near Show Low. I have been hunting mulies, antelope and elk in CO, whitetail in MO, with some success, and have been successful taking elk here in AZ. I've never hunted coues before. I got drawn for coues in unit 30B for 11/27-12/3/09. Does anyone have any advice for me?

natureboyfloyd Report post Posted August 23, 2009 I had success in 30B last year, but after scouting hard (all day looking, one 30 min. coffee break) in the Dragoons, for two weekends and Nov 11, I never saw a buck. I hunted there, saw several does, and no buck. However, a ground squirrel looked rather interested in what was down the creek--a buck? Any case, I tried a different approach, and scored a spike. Question is, how much time and scouting do you have/ experience seems to be there (more than mine). What will be your "Plan B"? Just my thoughts... Good Luck. EdD270 Report post Posted August 27, 2009 CouesAz, no I don't have an ATV, just an old F150 FWD. I do have some pretty good binos and a lot more patience than I used to have. My wife says I'm just old and lazy. Whatever. I plan to use my turkey seat and cushon for sitting and glassing. I plan to do a scouting trip down there after quail season opens, do some scouting and hunt quail, too. I've gotten maps from mytopo in the past and really like them, but I'm not sure what I want on it yet. My wife's nephew and his family live down near there and I hope to get some pointers from them, though they haven't hunted Coues, either. Meantime, I've been looking at BLM, USFS and AZ Gazeteer maps for general knowledge. I have shooting sticks, and an old camera tripod. Hoping that one or the other will work. I don't have plan "A" now, let alone plan "B", but hope to put something together before season opens. Thus the plea for help from you folks who are more knowledgeable and experienced than am I. I've hunted mulies here in AZ, but never coues, or Coues. My nephew is a fanatic, but has never hunted down there, either, and I don't see him very often. He's warned me that it will get to be addictive, like turkey hunting. I know different species have different habits, and know nothing about the Coues, so all advice, help, anecdotes and rumors are welcome. Thanks to you all for the info so far.
