Alaska Sitka Blacktail

Recommended Posts

A lot of people here seem to have an interest in the Alaskan Sitka Blacktails, so I though I'd post some pics from my rifle hunt a few years ago on Afognak Island (neighbor of Kodiak) My dad and I went up there for 4 days, had some rough weather, but made it happen on two decent bucks for our first time. Whales, deer, brown bears, waterfowl... What a trip! MY buck is the bigger one..

Nice pictures, I like hunting the "little deer" (Sitkas, and Coues') ;)

Nice critters.

Novermber sitka bucks are awesome. The rut is in full swing and they are super beefy animals. They are about the same height as a coues buck but they are much thicker and muscular. They get really big thick necks during the rut which makes them look super cool. The big black patch on the forehead just makes them look wicked! A mature sitka buck is a sight to behold.

My buddies "stud" buck from our 2007 trip. A 111" monster

We were deer hunting, but we knew there were a lot in the area. Just spotted them running around the hills..

Here are my two Sitka Blacktails, everyone here is probably sick of seeing them so I'm glad other folks have some pics to post. I will never get tired of looking at pictures of Sitkas, and the country they live in, just like the connection between Coues' and their amazing home.

Unfortunately, they only fox I saw were common reds, no silver or cross. Also, the G&F would have frowned on us helping ourselves to the bears.

More Pictures......

So does the one of 308's

Maybe some day but I doubt it :(

After reviewing the Picture I have to ask

what is the riffle?

I tell you what, as far as an AK hunt goes the Blacktail hunts are unbelievably reasonable.

AAA, 308Nut, Bill....all great bucks!!! That is a super fun hunt.

I went to Kodiak in 2006, passed up some nice bucks while searching for a monster, and ended up shooting this buck the evening before we were picked up. They are super stocky deer...almost look like a mule deer that has been sawed off at the knees. :D

I will go back some day and find that monster.

You guys better knock it off. I am starting to want to go black tail hunting and I cannot afford it this year after having our first baby AND trying to stash $$ away for my December AZ coues hunt.
