Any help appreciated

Recommended Posts

Wasn't sure which thread to put this under but I have a question about a quad I just purchased. It's a 2004 Polaris Sportsman 400. The guy didn't have the manual and I plan on ordering one but thought I'd ask this question to anyone who might know.

I changed all of the fluids. Local bike shop said 4oz of gear oil in the front and 5oz in the rear. I put 4oz in the front, went to the rear, put 5oz in there and checked the dipstick....nothing on the stick. Also, there's no way to check the front. Anyway, I put another ounce in and still nothing. I called local bike shop and they said, "okay, just keeping adding it until it shows up on the stick." hmmmmmm okay...

I ended up putting about 2/3qt in the rear-end(which is also for the transmission) until it read "safe" on the dipstick. I thought that 5oz sounded like very little but anyway...... Anyone own a like quad and might have info on how I know FOR SURE how much....especially in the front-end where I can't check? Thanks in advance

Jake

You may want to call around to other shops and find out what the most common answer is. OR you can go to a local bike shop, and read through the manual there. Ussually the newer bikes have similar transmissions through the years, and across different bikes (for instance the Yamaha Rhino and the Grizzly are pretty close when it comes down to it). I don't like very many shops here in the valley, espessially Town & Country/Ride Now Power Sports or what ever they are called this week. They've lost plastic pieces and other parts that "wheren't on the vehicle when it was brought in" even though it was.

I'd try an online search.... but I think the 500's and the Rangers take like 13-16 oz in the dif's.... Best of luck...

Thanks for the help guys. I've tried the online search (and will continue to) but haven't had luck so far. I'll check out some other shops as well..
