Couescrazy33 Report post Posted August 16, 2009 So i bought a Rem .300 wsm today. Was thinking about putting the Leupold vx-3 4.5-14 power scope on it. Does anyone else have any suggestions? looking for something for long range but yet affordable.
scoutm Report post Posted August 16, 2009 Try one of these. I purchased a demo from Camera land (site sponsor) and then sent it to Zeiss to have target nobs put on - they only cost me $50.00 Work out your drop chart and you are good to go. http://www.cameralandny.com/optics/zeiss.pl?page=521430
ajohunter Report post Posted August 16, 2009 Dont forget about the Vortex line of Rifle scopes. They are reasonably priced and have a great warranty.
desertdog Report post Posted August 16, 2009 Dont forget about the Vortex line of Rifle scopes. They are reasonably priced and have a great warranty. +1 I have the Leupold VXIII 4.5X14X50 and love it. But The Vortex are very good glass. My brother has the Viper 6.5X20X50 and it is a really good scope. I like my Leupold a little better but for the money I think my next scope will be a Vortex. desertdog Report post Posted August 16, 2009 Who carries vortex? You can find them at Sportsmans, but Camraland has a big selection.
RoughCut Report post Posted August 16, 2009 Honestly, why anybdy uses anything other than a Shepherd scope blows my mind. Best I have seen hands down. That ability to throw the scope to my eye and immediately know the range is invaluable. One-shot zeroing, no-math compensation, no dialing. It's a no brainer. My family has been using them for years and they've never let us down. Or you can spend more and have the comfort of having a big budget name on the side of the scope. youngbuck Report post Posted August 16, 2009 Ive looked through shepards before. I never thought they would work very good for me. The body of a coues is alot smaller than the body of elk. But, have never looked at a coues or an elk through a shepard. I wanna range it every time to. Helps me think about winddrift. On a plus note I have seen some big coues taken with a shepard scope used. Cabelas at one time had a reticle to this. Not sure if they still do. I think it was in their Alaskan guide 30mm line. coues7 Report post Posted August 16, 2009 Leupold and Zeiss get my vote. If you have a 300 WSM you may as well get a scope with turrets. I shoot both Nightforce and Leupold's. You can get the VX3 and have Leupold add the turrets so that it is similar to the Mark IV.
Couescrazy33 Report post Posted August 16, 2009 ok now here is my question on the turrets cause i have never used them. do turrets come just with a standard drop? or if i sight my rifle in for 200 how do all the other turrets work and is it pretty accurate? youngbuck Report post Posted August 16, 2009 Turrets are tailored to your load or factory loads. You can check out www.kentonindustries.com for info.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted August 16, 2009 How far is long range? for up to500 yards, you could easily stick with a ballistic reticle like the Leupold Boone& Crockett, or the RapidZ 800 on the Zeiss Conquest For about $640, you can get a VX3 4.5-14x40 with CDS turret, and when you have a load settled for your rifle, have them make the custom dial. http://leupold.com/hunting-and-shooting/pr...-5-14x40mm-cds/ Turrets are easy if you have a chosen load. To be "simple" you can zero at 200 yards, and determine with free programs how many inches or minutes you need to come up to adjust for different distances. An easy program where you inputthe data and hunt conditions are these on here: http://www.jbmballistics.com/calculations/calculations.html The small u range cards are handy to print and tape to the stock. Since temp and especially altitude effect trajectory, enter the best conditions for your hunt area, and another for where you will sight in and verify the load and come-ups. 308nut, et al, can tell you that life can get more exacting with TPW meters and palm pilots with exbal ballistc programs in the field, ACIs, scope levels, etc. A wealth of information here and in the LRH forums (especially the articles) http://www.longrangehunting.com/index.php Turrets 101 sans pics http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/u...true#Post141082

coueshunter Report post Posted August 16, 2009 I switched from Swarovski scope to the Vari x III 4.5 x 14 with a premier reticle zero at 200 and dots out to 600. I really like the ease of this scope..........
