My 12 year old son has given up on the draw already , he has watched his fourteen year old sister get goose eggs for the last 5 years. He is shooting his bow everyday to get ready..The age thing is up to the parent, my daughter was ready to go at 10 but my son was this year when i started to see the responsibility needed for a safe hunt. standman Report post Posted August 12, 2009 There is a youngster that my brother and I take hunting quite a bit. His family is not a hunting family, but he was interested in hunting so we took him along with us alot before he was 10. When he was 10 he killed his first deer, a little 3x3 on a general hunt. He is now about to turn 16. Ever since he was 10 he has put in his first two choices as junior hunts with easier draw adult hunts for the rest of his choices. He has never drawn a jr. deer tag or elk tag . I think some more junior tags could be added with some taken off the general seasons. It is too bad that he may never get a chance to experience the junior hunt. Thank goodness there are units that don't fill. At least he can have one of those tags. JLG Report post Posted August 12, 2009 I don't have children of my own in the Jr. range, but I have friends that do and friends that will and Grandchildren that will. I helped on a Jr. Javelina hunt last year, it was a friend of mine and his 13 and 16 year old sons. They both shot a pig. It was the first big game animal for the 13 year old. I came away from the weekend feeling like I was a big part of a milestone for the 13 year old. I am 47 now and shot my first Big Game animal at 15. I still remember and treasure that weekend and the neighbor who took me under his wing. I feel like maybe the 13 year old will have the same memories 30 years from now. It is nice to give the kids the first shot of the season so to speak. I am helping out a 16 year old and his dad on a 23 Jr, deer hunt the 9th of Oct. in 23. The kid is excited and so am I. I am also helping out the same father/son combo and another father/son combo in 33 for pigs the weekend of Nov. 20th. I really enjoy the jr.s hunts, feels really good to give back, Take Care, JLG. DUG Report post Posted August 12, 2009 I don't think there's any thing wrong with what Richard is asking. He wants to know what others think. I think if you can keep your kids interested in the outdoors they will love you more for it and will likely keep their kids in the outdoor lifestyle. There is a house down the street where all the "druggie kids " go after school. I don't want my kids to be like that. I feel bad that their parents aren't more involved in their lives. I was not born to a hunting family. I had a BB gun when I was 10 and then some friends invited us to go dove hunting and then it progressed to quail, deer and then antelope and elk. All 3 of my kids love the outdoors in one way or another. They enjoy the trips we take just to see the animals. They enjoy hunting and all the things they encounter. The junior hunts give kids the oppurtunity to hunt and have a real chance to harvest something. G&F knows that kids are the future of hunting and that's why they offer these hunts. My girl got drawn for elk this year and is absolutely excited about trying to harvest one. We drew 5 elk tags this year and her hunt is the one I hope is the most successful. I didn't mean to get off the subject but I think the more hunts the kids can do the better.
GameHauler Report post Posted August 13, 2009 This topic shows the difference between CWT and some of the other forums I was pretty upset when I read the opening post and wanted to say allot more than I did but I respect this site and its members and oped out with my short comment. Some of your posts have shown me I could have been off base with what I wanted to say as you guys are right that TATAat27 asked a valid question and I am proud of how the family has responded without saying what some of us felt like saying. TATA I hope you have come to understand a little about the JR hunts and do not feel they are stealing your Tag. Please take TLH up on the offer to join the youth camps or try to go with a friend on a hunt. You will without a doubt come away from it with a new outlook NOTHING BEATS HUNTING WITH KIDS
bowhunter4life Report post Posted August 13, 2009 NOTHING BEATS HUNTING WITH KIDS yes sir, it is all about the kids. it is the kid that lives inside us that keeps us going back for more, as my wife says, how many of them coues deer do you need any way..........................that is the problem every year the kid comes out of us and we need more. if you have every hunted with or spent time with kids out in the field, no amount of any thing else matters! once you watch and see the pure joy and excitement they show us. I think all kids that graduate through the hunter saftey should be given "youth tag"!
ac guy Report post Posted August 13, 2009 The more we can do for our youth's, the better. They are our future!! We do not have children, but our favorite volunteer work is anything involved with the youth. I would give up a general hunt to make sure the youth's get opportunity. You should contact TLH about helping at the 23 camp this year. It's a lot of fun.
DEF110 Report post Posted August 13, 2009 I had the best hunt I have ever been on last year on my son’s first Elk hunt. He was 11 and ended up shooting my 7mm Rem Mag good thing I took it as a backup. It is so cool to see him grow in maturity in one week of hunting. I would give up me getting a tag to take him hunting any time, at least for the next couple years LOL .
savagman Report post Posted August 14, 2009 Perhaps they should shift tags from general hunts over to youth hunts? My neice put in for elk and deer youth hunts and was not drawn for either. She is new to hunting and enjoyed being out with kids her age last year. With so many left over tags why not open up more youth tags and reduce general tags? A quality hunt with reduced hunter density and pressure makes for a more relaxed hunting educational experience. Without hunter recruitment our sport will die. I picked up a left over general tag for her in 36B. We hope to not have to deal with the potential border issues. Take a kid hunting and fishing.
hime Report post Posted August 14, 2009 I also am all for the youth hunts. I was lucky enough to draw a doe tag on the kaibab when I was 10. To this day, that hunt with my dad and family hunting friends means more to me than any other hunt I have been on. I have been hunting for twenty years since that hunt and have filled a couple tags but nothing to brag about. I keep dreaming that the next few years I'll take a real nice bull or buck. My daughter will turn 10 in four years, and I can say that I would give up any tags for myself to let her have a hunt like I did when I was 10. Its amazing how much their excitement gets to you. When she was 4 she spotted her first deer by herself. She was so proud and to this day reminds me about how she saw the deer before I did. I think it would be great if more kids had these chances to grow self confidence and mature into responsible adults. JDH
