savagman Report post Posted August 11, 2009 Just wondering when the elk start bugling and how late they usually bugle. I have a tag for a limited opportunity hunt that starts in Oct. I figure getting out early and listening for them might be a good scouting plan.

Red Rabbit Report post Posted August 11, 2009 I had an Oct 15 cow tag a few years ago. The elk were still bugling early in the mornings. You might go out scouting in middle to late Sept to listen/see where the bulls are when they are more vocal. Does your hunt start Oct 2 or 16?

buglethemin Report post Posted August 11, 2009 I helped a friend out in 2005 on an Oct L/O hunt in 22 matazal hunt for any elk. We called in several nice bulls, and they were still responding to cow calls when he killed a nice 6x7 on Oct 23.
BASS Report post Posted August 12, 2009 I always thought mid September or so. At least thats when I always went out to listen, and I plan to head out this year around that time too for some video and photos.
Browning'sCustomMeat Report post Posted August 12, 2009 They are already talking a bit, barks, chuckles etc. out by my place. Nothing too dramatic though. I have heard them bugle on Thanksgiving under the rim.
pwrguy Report post Posted August 13, 2009 I have heard them rippin on junior cow hunts first week of October, and I know they usually talk until the end of the month, but not every day.
