John O Report post Posted August 7, 2009 Anyone else get their 2nd choice and find out there are left over tags for their 1st choice??????? Happens if you don't get your first choice during the initial bonus point draw. I assume you had bonus points? Happened to my son last year for a Jr. Javelina hunt. m77 Report post Posted August 8, 2009 A co-worker got drawn for his 2nd choice with 61 tags left over for his first choice. Seems like there should be some way to fill 1st choice applications with 1st choice tags if left over tags are available. That means some 3rd, 4th and even 5th choice applicants got a tag for that unit ahead of 1st choice applicants. Elkaholic is correct. If you get drawn in AZ you lose your bonus points. In other states, Colorado, if you don't get drawn with your 1st choice you don't lose your bonus points. You even get an additional point for this year. I don't understand why this system can't be simplified. It's like filing your taxes at the end of the year. You have to hire an accountant just to apply for a tag!!!!!!!! Rule 1 applies if rule 2 fails unless rule 3 takes presidence over rule 1 with the exception of rule 4 being nulified. There has to be a better system. RoughCut Report post Posted August 8, 2009 Anyone else get their 2nd choice and find out there are left over tags for their 1st choice??????? Are you a Non-Resident???? If you are then the cap may have been met for NR for your first choice. If that isn't the case, you were most likely given your 2nd choice in the bonus pass and didn't have a shot at your first choice. What permit number did you draw and for what unit??? I will check for you.
bullwidgeon Report post Posted August 8, 2009 Yes on the collared peccary draw 2 years ago. When I called to yell at the AZGFD lady on the phone about having to drive all the way to 36A to shoot a poor old peccary she said if you have bogus points and are in the max pool it happens. Apparently 1 bogus point was max for 33 HAM that year and I didn't draw it. The only way to get around it is to only put one choice on your app, especially for hunts that historically have leftover tags. And for the record 36A sucks for vicious peccaries compared to 33. I saw a few but they were quite docile, I didn't get charged and have to shoot my way out of the herd like I have to in 33 every year.... Bret M.

Coues79 Report post Posted August 8, 2009 They are just covering this very question as I type this response. The commission recommended to the draw director to "FIX" this very problem, either manually or mechanically in the future. The draw director then said they have a meeting this Monday to fix this problem. There is a live streaming feed going on right now for this meeting. http://www.azgfd.gov/inside_azgfd/CommissionCam.shtml
Lucafu1 Report post Posted August 8, 2009 It could be worse, they could have rejected you for leaving your first choice blank. That is what they had for me. I was so pissed. That is impossible becasue we always fill out all blanks and pass what picked to other friends and family. They just made $28 extra on us.

RHINO Report post Posted August 8, 2009 A few years ago I was drawn for my second choice javalina tag when there were leftover tags on my first choice. And this year I didn't get drawn in the first go round so I put in for the left over tags. When I called in to see if I got drawn they said that they never got my application. After talking to the third person that was confused why they didn't get my application, I informed her that I had put a tracer on it and that they indeed got my application at 8:51 am on monday morning. All of a sudden they found my long lost application and said I didn't get drawn. I call bull crap. They kept blaming me why they did'nt have my app untill I divulged that I had a tracker on it. You never know what answer you are going to get and which answer is bs and which one is true.
