300 ultra mag reloading help

Recommended Posts

I shoot 175 Berger VLDs and ended up with 84 grns of RL-22, Fed 215 @ 3150 fps. I have a Savage 116 with a 24" barrel, had issues with slower powders like Retumbo, H1000, and IMR7828. Went to the RL-22 and I have shot a 3 round best @.625" This is what I will use on my speed goat hunt in WY in 6 weeks....can't wait!!!!

From everything I've read and heard a 1 in 12 is better for the 175-190 range, but 210's still shot better in mine. the 1in 10 should handle the 210's even better. I didn't have any problems with that load shane, except it was hard on my brass. Never seemed to be even close to locking up the bolt. I've found I get 200-300 fps faster out of my barrel than all my friends that shoot similar loads.

my oal is 3.64.

You noticed he was shooting a 28" bbl vs. stock 26" bbl, but still, I would only expect about 150 fps faster than the 26" bbl. I shoot 200 grn accubonds at 3180 fps with 93 gn Retumbo so I am suprised at your speeds a little, Houston. That is great you are having accuracy with the 210 VLD. Usually it takes a faster twist to stabilize that long bullet. I couldn't get them to fly well out of my 1 in 10 bbl and I tried almost every kind of combination. Decided it wasn't worth shooting out the bbl and just went to the trusty ol' Accubonds. Goes to show that some guns just like some things better than others.

Sure does and I really didn't want to be shooting the 210's that hot with only 92 gr of retumbo, so I backed it down a bit and really am happy so far.

Cade, some others here that have the same barrel as I do report similarly that it seems to shoot faster than other barrels of the same length and load etc... who knows. I sure don't.

I'm using 100 grns of RL25 with Barnes 150 grn tipped tripple shocks. It's running out there about 3480 fps. Out to 600 yds it's still grouping. I haven't shot any farther yet, but will soon. I found for my Sendero the OAL was 3.692". That barely fit in the Magazine. I like this load for coues but would probably have to work up a load with a larger bullet for elk.
