hawkeye Report post Posted July 29, 2009 Man if you are serious about getting a long range shooter, I don't think you could do any better than contacting 30-378 shtr. He is selling his dream rifle. I have seen that rifle shoot. It is amazing. I don't think you could get a better shooting rifle for the price. I know he has over three thousand dollars in that thing. And man it will step out there.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 29, 2009 308Nut, I did a comparison of the 338 Edge(RUM) to the 300 RUM and 7 RUM, using heavier SMK bullets. Data is for 200 yard zero, 5000' elevation, 70*. At 1000 yards that Edge is a winner for retained vel, Energy and especially wind drift (" with 10mph wind). Might be overkill on a Coues, but impressive for elk. Cartridge, Bullet/MV, Elev @1000, Vel@1000, Energy@1000, WDrift@1000 338 Edge 300 SMK, 2830, -226, 1959, 2557, 38 300 RUM 220 SMK, 2975, -212, 1974, 1904, 41 300 RUM 200 AB, 3100, -207, 1903, 1608, 47 7 RUM 160 AB, 3230, -199, 1888, 1266, 50 7 RUM 175 SMK 3100, -225, 1739, 1176, 58 6.5 WSM 130Scir 3260, -189, 1992, 1145, 46 My coues gun is a 6.5 WSM shooting a 130 Scirocco. 308Nut Report post Posted July 29, 2009 Thanks RR. When you factor the "paper ballistics" together with the tuneability and rediculous accuracy and a decent barrel/throat life this round offers, it starts to make sense. My only complaint (if you want to call it that) is that it generates a bit more recoil than I am used to but it is managable. Also my Edge weighs in at 12.5 pounds scoped. Most Edges out there are 15-16 pounds. This eliminates quite a bit of the recoil.
TAM Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Thanks RR. My scoped 300 RUM with a 28 inch barrel only weighs 8 and change.
308Nut Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Defensive edge makes a 10 pound version which is more managable for hunting.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 30, 2009 I saw where McWhorter Rifles makes a 6 lb 15 oz 338 Edge. Wonder if its nickname is "the snotkicker"?

Diamondbackaz Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Get one of these with a Lilja barrel in 300 RUM http://www.mcmfamily.com/mcmillan-rifles-c...outdoorsman.php . Top it with a Loupy scope with turrets and you would be good to go. These guys are local too.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 What I would build: Barrel : 25-26 inch Lilja Action: Remington 700, of course Stock: McMillan in what ever configuration I wanted at the time. Talley one piece rings Zeiss 4.5-14x44 with turrets. Caliber? Either one of the big 30's... 300 RUM, 300 wby, etc OR (and probably this one) a big, fast 7mm. 7 RUM, 7 WBY. 7 mm's are more than enough for anything, and their bullets tend to have the highest BC's around. Hooked_on_Coues Report post Posted July 31, 2009 Doug, Could you run the ballistics on the 6.5 with a 140 berger going 3050fps? I am curious to see the difference with the big boys guns.
