W.O.T Report post Posted July 27, 2009 we couldnt find anything in the regs that say you cant "bait" for deer... such as corn, apples, alfalfa, etc... can someone enlighten us on the this topic? either way can someone throw a regulations reference our way? also... anyone using pool salt pellets? the stuff is pretty cheap for a bag, thought I'd ask
Az Hunter Report post Posted July 27, 2009 I asked a Game Ranger buddy once about that and he told me that you can not bait in Arizona on public lands but it is legal on your private land. Now that word "bait" can get sticky from what I hear. A salt block out for cattle isn't bait but a pile of salt pellets under a tree stand could be conceived that way. It's all up to "intent". There is another sticky word. I would say err on the side of caution and you'll be fine. I have no legal backing or proof to my statements so take it for what it is.. 308Nut Report post Posted July 27, 2009 A number of years ago, the game department told me you could use salt and mineral licks for deer SO LONG as archery tackle was used. It was NOT ok for rifle hunters. This was in the early 90's so the rules could have easily changed.
joeybari Report post Posted July 27, 2009 i was told by a G&F guy about 4 years ago that you can put out salt licks before the hunting season starts but even that is up in the air subject to interpretation by the officer out in the field (did not know what that meant at the time but i guess he meant cow salt licks vs salt pellets ) but you can not hunt over them (salt licks) once the season starts that goes for any hunt or any game. soazarcher Report post Posted July 27, 2009 You can bait for any animal except for bear, and water fowl. Exactly, every animal in as except bears and migratory birds (ducks, doves, geese) It has not changed in decades, but it will soon if we are not careful and INVOLVED in the rule making process. AZwhitebear Report post Posted July 28, 2009 I have a flyer about G&F looking at baning the use of salt and other "baits" that I got from BOWSNIPER that I can e-mail anyone that is interested. Also there is an e-mail address at the bottom for further info; (azhunters4fairchase@cox.net) There was another topic that was posted awhile back but could not find it. This is something that will affect all hunters in AZ even if you don't bait. From what i understand they will be voting on this in Oct.
AZantlerhead Report post Posted July 28, 2009 You can bait for any animal except for bear, and water fowl. Yup, to the best of my knowledge. That is the baiting laws summed up. As far as I know and was taught. In this state.
Az Hunter Report post Posted July 28, 2009 You can bait for any animal except for bear, and water fowl. Yup, to the best of my knowledge. That is the baiting laws summed up. As far as I know and was taught. In this state. That is what I found also. After my first post it got me thinking so I went through the entire regulations page by page and the only three places I found that banned baiting was water fowl, bear, and you can not use live bait or what used to be a living thing for trapping. All those rules are in lawyer language and I aint one so again take it for what it is. Next time I see my ranger buddy I'll ask him again.
