Couesnut Report post Posted July 27, 2009 I've asked the same thing on this site years back?? & got little response. I know of only 3 confirmed TRUE cactus coues. VERY RARE INDEED!!! One was killed by Jay Gates in New Mex. in the late 80s. A huge 158" toad, weigh opprox. 140 lbs. (See his book) One killed by Bill Sathoff in old Mex. in the early 90s, that I witnessed. Young buck, 13 pts.?? 106" ?? One killed by one of the Mattuachs?? I talked to him & have seen pics. Bret "Bullwidgen"would know more on that one. I do have Pics. of the other 2 I would like to hear more as well. DH
Coues Sniper Report post Posted July 27, 2009 Never seen one on the hoof, but I've held a couple that others have killed. Seen pictures of a couple more. It does happen, but just like in mule deer, pretty rare.

Guest 300ultramag. Report post Posted July 27, 2009 Its a coues that lives off of cactus only Im quite certain its a buck that doesnt regrow his antlers annually and also doesnt shed them as well so the result is a velvet mass that has very unique characteristics Beau
Coues79 Report post Posted July 27, 2009 I believe it is usually or predominantly due to the loss or damage to the testicles of the deer. The loss or lack of hormone that is responsible for the shedding of velvet is no longer in the deer, causing it to continually grow antler. If I'm wrong, someone correct me please. GameHauler Report post Posted July 27, 2009 I thought cactus bucks dont shed their velvet? You may be right Casey but I can not see how he could not rub off velvet year after year with feeding, fleeing ect. Maybe or experts will chime in.
IHunt2live Report post Posted July 27, 2009 Check out jim hefflfinger's book "Deer of The Southwest" he talks about them in there. Casey is right a true cactus buck will ALWAYS be in velvet and never shed its antlers. An common cause is loss, or some other problems, of his "manhood". GameHauler Report post Posted July 27, 2009 Not disagreeing with either of you and that is why I hope Jim will jump in. Maybe the pictures I posted are not a cactus but he still has velvet on him and that may be the reference to not shedding that we have all heard. I just have a hard time beleaving a Deer can go about normal everyday life and not rub off 5,6,7 year old velvet Where are you Jim
bullwidgeon Report post Posted July 28, 2009 My uncles killed one down in the 36 units back in the 80's. It was missing it's nads, looked like a barbwire fence accident. It had velvet antlers and was all knobby and gnarly with a really bizarre looking rack. It is hanging in my uncles house to this day. I might have a picture of it around someplace or another, if I find it I will post it...
