Indian Shikar

Recommended Posts

What I would give to have been able to hunt India back in those days.... Tiger, Guar, Asian leopard, Asiatic rhino, Himalayan bear, etc..

Guar shikar (one of my dream hunts that is sadly no longer available):

Bengal tiger shikaris:

Typical mode of transportation when tiger hunting:

Lead was administered in rather large doses in those days...

I hope if that re-incarnation is true, I come back as a Brit born in those times..

I like this vintage forum!

Killer photos! That golf ball launcher is something else. It sure would be odd to see a caliber that didnt start with a decimal point. Looks about an inch to me.

Wow, great find on those pics Scottyboy. When I created the forum I didn't really think of all the international hunts that could grace the forum. Thanks for adding these. Very neat stuff. Some of it sure demonstrates the real need to conserve wildlife so future hunting opportunities are not lost.

Not a problem Amanda!!

As you know, I am an Africa nut through and through, but if India were still an option, I would be ALL over it. There is (was) such a diversity over there. I can only imagine how fun it must have been over there 100 yrs ago.

I was bitten by the Africa bug, too, Scottyboy, and as you do I also lament that India's hunting ended before I reached the point in life where I was hunting internationally.

Some of the people for whom I've written books got there in its heyday, though, and their stories are something else. If I were younger and in better health, I'd be all over Asia now, hunting its many types of deer -- especially a white-lipped stag in China and a hog deer in Pakistan or Tibet.

Incidentally, Amanda, when India shut its doors to hunters it was not because of a scarcity of wildlife -- that came later as the country's population exploded out of control.
