Alright I have to ask some questions.. I have been in the mtns and desert hunting, hiking and you name it all my life. I have had the oppurtunity to see things that most people dream of, but this is only the second time I have run across a pack like this out of all my outings. Yea Yea I know it is funny but I hear all kinds of stories about these things from they will throw rocks at you to even having the whole pack attack you.. I even heard one story of them jumping on a guys truck after he shot one (most likely to much alcohol in that story). But either way does anyone know the truth behind these rodents??? Has anyone else heard crazy stories or are my friends just not normal?

Good luck on the tags hopefully they will be out today....

I've heard quite a few legends about them as well. I know when I put the hammer down on one the pack scattered leaving me and one dead. Then again it may have been the 7mm mag hammer in the tight confines of the bottom, even if they were still close I wouldn't have heard em. They sure were a noisy bunch before the shot though, some of the strangest sounds I ever heard.

The main story I hear is they are like Marines, no one gets left behind. Most the time they carry the dead off with them when they go. Like I said though I collected mine without incident.

I heard they rummage through your campsite when you are gone, eating anything chocolate and taking everyones left shoe.

A couple of years ago , I read a book "chulo" - all about coatimundi's. It was excellent ... Talks about heirarchy of the tribe, habitat, feeding , breeding - all of that stuff. You can get a used copy on Amazon for 1.99. This family lived, researched and studied Coati's for a long time in Arizona.

(it dispells a lot of myths)- but put the chocolate in a safe place ;)

My father and I came accross a HUGE group of them last year while deer hunting. I immediately got really excited as I had never seen a coatimundi before and have allways wanted one. After seeing them go into a canyon we hurried to the edge to try and get a shot. When I got to the edge of the canyon there was one coati about 20 yds looking right at me. All I could see was the its face staring at me throught the tall grass. I put my crosshairs on his face and fired. I missed!!! At 20yds! Now here is where things got kind of crazy. I don't know if the coati was charging me or if he was confused and spooked from the shot but as soon as I fired he imediately bolted right at me. I started back stepping as I was cycleing another round into my rifle, put my rifle to my shoulder and shot the coati at about 5-10 feet. I didn't even look through the scope, just pointed and shot. It was an adrenaline rush like no other. I think my dad was freaking out more than I was as he watched the whole thing happed from about 30 yds away. I know it sounds far fetched but that is the honest to God truth about what happened. Some people have told me that the coati was charging me and some have said that he was probably just confused when I shot and just happened to run right at me in his confusion. Either way it was an experience I will never forget! I allways wanted a coatimundi so I could get it mounted but after shooting him with my .270 at that close there was too much damage. :(

I've seen a bunch of the little devils while at work out in the 36 units.. And have seen them a couple of times while out deer hunting, but didn't want to ruin the hunt by shooting one. I'm still waiting on getting one while quail hunting.. my dogs go APE S___ when they get a whiff of them!!

The ones in the large packs are the females, juvie males and young.. aka, coatimundies. The ones you want to hunt, if you want a great mount, are the big solitary loner males.. the coatis.

My buddy in the east Mesa had one get in his backyard and tear up his dogs pretty good. There was 3 big hounds that got it pretty good. One had to get stitches on his stomach from the coati. Another took a couple nasty scratches in the face. I saw the aftermath with my own eyes. Ive seen some hunting and scouting but never in big groups. I videod my girlfriend trying to shoot one on her coues hunt year. Never saw him long enough to get a shot and the wind was blowin somethin fierce. Got some video though. I should do somethin with that.

Well, to start with coatimundi are not rodents. They are more like raccoons. They have some serious teeth and are pretty serious predators on small stuff like rodents, lizards, birds. But they also insects and pinon nuts and such. So, like a raccoon they are omnivores, eating a variety of animals/insects/plants.

I haven't seen them be aggressive and have had single males tree themselves when I surprised them, much like a small bear will do. They then sit up in the tree and make some strange noises and look nervous.

I have a neat male coati skull I found once. If I get a chance, I will take pics and post them so you can see the teeth.

I've ran into 4 different bunches of them, and 2 seperate loner's ( one in new mexico lion hunting) , the loner was gone in seconds, the other 3 bunches just kind of ran off. ( i shot one out of each bunch, and i mounted myself one, they are pretty cool) the one loner we ran into in new mexico we were trailing a lion with our dogs, and a coati ran right over the track, and it was a heck of a fight, it finally went up a tree. but yea the are mean
