az4life Report post Posted May 13, 2005 I plan to attend an ADA meeting in the near future but before I do... I am curious about the ADA and yes, I have read much of their site including previous newsletters, but did not see any info on how many members the ADA has? After the small amount of research, one thing puzzles me. So many posts about the ADA ask for new members and new board members. Is the ADA desperate for just anyone to fill a board position or is the goal to find good people who are well qualified? I am not trying to slam the organization as it is obvious they do a lot of good, but with so many posts suggesting people join and serve on the board makes me feel like walking into a church for the first time and being asked to preach the sermon or teach a class. I think that recruiting so forcefully can turn peopla away before they get their feet wet. PM reply from ADA members welcome on this topic or we can chat on the phone about it. thanks
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted May 13, 2005 AZ4Life, The ADA has about 500 paid members currently. But we are always seeking new and dedicated people to the organization. An organization can't grow without recruitment and this forum seems like a good way to reach potential members, which is why several of us are pushing for people to join and step-up. Ask anyone who has worked on a trash clean up or a water hole project and they will probably tell you that there are a lot more hunters that should have come to the project than actually do. It seems that 10% of the hunters do all work for the rest. Which is why we are trying to build the organization with passionate people. Many of our board members have served for 5-10 years (including the time when the ADA was the AMDA (AZ Mule Deer Association)). That's 10 years of working out your schedule to attend monthly meetings in addition to raising money for wildlife and working on habitat improvement projects. Getting new board members would help those people take a break for awhile. But there don't seem to be many people willing to make that kind of time committment. So I ask people whenever I can. Our board is a high quality group and with the addition of new members would continue to be. It doesn't take any great qualifications to be a good board member. You just have to be passionate about deer so that you are willing to make the time committment. Amanda
coueshunter Report post Posted May 13, 2005 AZ4life: I hear you and yet I personally dont know any other way to get people involved. Almost all of the 500 memebers dont get involved on projects or at meetings, they just mail in their 25.00 and call their effort good...........I personally have been involved for a few years on ADA and do it because someone has to.......I bet wetmule and Amanda do it for the same reasons.........somehow someway Arizona needs to get people involved passionately with wildlife or we will lose out.........please spend some time thinking about what you can help out with........maybe you can be a board member or volunteer for Juniors projects, just about any help would be appreciated.........Allen Taylor..... couesdiehard Report post Posted May 13, 2005 CouesWhitetail, I have looked at the AZDEER.ORG site and I am planning to attend the meeting May 18 at 6:30 pm. Hope to see a lot folks from this forum in attendance. Lee
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted May 13, 2005 Great, glad to hear you are coming. I hope others do too. Also, I wanted to add that if some of you would like to learn more about the Kaibab issue, wish to offer some opinions about it or just listen to discussions, or see the ground for yourself, then you might want to come to a meeting up there the weekend of May 21-22. The highest ranking administrators and biologists from AGFD will be there along with some of the USFS and probably some BLM people and of course several board members from the ADA. We will be touring the habitat up there and talking about the issues that affect management of that herd. This is a very exciting meeting. It has taken a long time and lots of work by sportsmen/women and management agencies to make this happen. If there are some of you that want to attend the field trip, please let me know ASAP. The ADA is providing food and we have a central camping area where we will be meeting. I will be there along with several other board members. Amanda
muskrat Report post Posted May 14, 2005 Amanda and Allen - in my column last month, I highlighted various hunting-related organizations in Arizona, starting with ADA. I also sent e-mails to the ladies that the ADA website lists as having responsibility for the newsletter, offering to help out with writing/editing. I haven't received a response. I can't make many meetings or projects, but am willing to promote ADA via my columns, helping with newsletters, or even if they need articles/press releases written - people just need to let me know... CHD Report post Posted May 14, 2005 Allen, been busy, just got on here tonite and saw your message about the Strip project this weekend. My fault for not knowing about it ahead of time, as this actually would've been a good weekend for me to head down and help out. So obviously, I'm not in 13B this weekend. However, rest assured that I mean what I say and I say what I mean. I will indeed get to the Strip. I'm a lot of things................but full of sheet ain't one of 'em. Good news about LSD doing the vegetation survey and the Commission thinking about it. Is there still a chance that the buck quota can be minimal this year? Sounds like a big, important meeting coming up this month. I'd sure like to be there, but can't get away then................and I'd prolly just get into it with the ignorant, narrow-minded bureaucrats, LOL. I've got some good examples from other states that parallel this Kaibab story that you all should know about, but don't have time to post' em tonite. I am willing to bet.................that the present ADA board members...........aren't really tired..............but are tired of being unappreciated. Thanks very much to all ADA board members including Kevin and Amanda for your efforts! I may never draw another Arizona deer tag, but I really do appreciate your efforts! Also, thanks to Allen Taylor for donating your time to help AZ deer and deer hunters! I really appreciate it!
coueshunter Report post Posted May 14, 2005 I think all of us are under time crunch.......I am sitting here in my house getting ready for the kids baseball today.......it is hard to get involved especially with family constraints........I wish I could go to all the things that are going on like 13b project........the Kaibab meeting is going to be very important.......I am hoping there is a good turnout............it seems like there is so many things happening and most people take a passive role when right now we need people to jump in and actively help out...........Thanks CHD for your passion, lets all learn and help out how we can..........thanks Muskrat...........thanks Wetmule, Amanda, et al........everyone who is helping..........Allen................ This are only suggestions, there is a lots of room for improvement and a lots of places that need or help so if we can join one or two organizations that will be awesome. Ernesto C. couesdiehard Report post Posted May 15, 2005 Hey all; G&F web site claims the hard-copy regs books have been sent out to stores. Should be showing up in the stores as early as Monday the 16th. Thought you might want to know. As anyone sees them out yet I'd like to know where. Lee
couesdiehard Report post Posted May 17, 2005 FYI, Regs are hitting the stores now. I was able to find some yesterday in the BLM Public Lands Office in downtown Phoenix. Check out the maps! What do you think of the demarcation line at the south end of the state? Lee
25-06 Report post Posted May 17, 2005 Yep there out I just got of the phone with walmart here in Tucson and they said they came in yesterday....couesdiehard thanx for the info.
azpackhorse Report post Posted May 17, 2005 I don't know about anyone else but seeing that line across the southern end of my state and reading the "warning" in the legend really makes my blood boil. I will continue to put in for the southern units............I might just have to change the weapon I use to hunt down there, time to break out the ol' AR15. I picked up the regulations and envelopes yesterday at wally world on Cortaro.
wetmule Report post Posted May 17, 2005 Amanda, You are giving hunters far too much credit in saying that 10% of the hunting public does all the wildlife conservation work that needs to be done while the other 90% sits on the sidelines. I would have to say that it is below 1% and possibly far below 1%. We probably have 100,000 to 200,000 hunters in AZ, if it were 10% that would mean we should have 10 to 20 thousand volunteers doing wildlife conservation work. Hopefully that will change when and if the Conservation Bonus Point rule goes into effect and you can actually earn a bonus point for giving back to the wildlife. No, very few people ever give back to the wildlife or ever do anything to insure that there is wildlife for them to hunt or to insure that their kids and grandkids get to hunt. They want their tags and permits and they want big bucks and bulls in the woods and they want their hunter opportunity and they are good at bitchin and moaning when things don't go their way; but they aren't willing to ever do anything about it. Probably pretty harsh, but it is reality.
