AntlerObsession Report post Posted July 18, 2009 I am looking at getting a new camo jacket and have seen some ghilly-like 3d camo products. Are they worth the extra money? Do they get in the way of drawing a bow? Do they have a tendency to catch on brush more, and therefore be noisier? Any advice would help. Thanks!

stalkincoues Report post Posted July 19, 2009 Good question. I bought a Ghillie from Sportsmans Warehouse a few years ago, (actually a B-day gift that I HAD TO HAVE.)! I am sure we all know how that goes. This thing is crazy looking while on. I mean I could stand up flat against against someones wall of their house beside or behind a shrub or some kind of plant and you probably wouldn't be able to determine it is a person, don't believe me? Give me adress and I may surprise you J/K.... but seriously..... This suit camo's very well and I'll try to find a pic of me wearing it. Pro's Camo's very well Breaks up your outline completely Pieces of material are around 6-8" long, really helping with camo and blending in to a natural type environment Cons Bulky, about the size of a medium sized backpacking pad, only want to throw on after spotting an animal and when you start your stalk HOT! It is a lot of material and I would not reccomend it for an AZ August hunt below 5,000' or so. With all the material hanging it is a Cat Claw and Mesquite MAGNET!!!!! Found out the hard way this year. The arm will interfere with your bowstring if not trimmed down or wearing an arm guard, learned from experience My suit is basically a top that goes down to about mid shins (maybe just below the knees). I have a hat that has all the Ghille frills hanging off them 360* I need to trim around my eyes and face so it does not interfere anymore. They also make shin attachments for 100% (minus shoes) body coverage, but only opted for only the hat and body suit. I usually use it for coyote calling or just kepping it in the truck just in case. In January I spotted a pretty respectable Mulie and decided to go after him. I threw on the Ghille and proceeded to get after him. I have the hat and top that covers down to just below the knee. I worked my way through cat claw and mesquites. Man this thing caught every single cat claw and mesquite within a 1/2 mi. (or at leat it felt like it). After approx. 45 min. I finally came over a small hill after climbing out of the wash. I knew the buck was right there. As I came up out of the wash the sandy bank gave and rocks tumbled down into the wash making all kinds of noise and SUPER loud crashing. Up to the size of watermelons. The wind was good so I wasn't too worried, just needed to gain visual at this point. I popped over the hill and there were his does staring at me at about 45 yards. We looked at each other for about a minute while they blew and tried to regroup. Two does ran about 50 more yards and looked back trying to figure out just what the heck I was. The buck walked up just after that and saw me. Gave me plenty of time to use my Range Finder and get the shot. My shot slapped my arm something fierce and shot and wound up shooting way low. No biggie, was just happy the stalk work so well. I almost threw on an arm guard but typically have 0 sleeve interferance. I almost grabbed my longbow instead of my compound, maybe the results would have been different. Had I trimmed the arm previously or used an arm guard this dude would have been toast!!!!! It was a cool experience nonetheless. Those deer had no idea what the heck I was or what was going on. Even after I shot the first time the buck ran maybe thirty yards and decdided to stop again and take another look for more than 10 seceonds. Granted it is a Mulie, but neat regardless These things are great but have their place just like anything. Maybe a good median would be one of the leafy type 3-D suits. A buddy has one and are pretty cool. Just make sure you weigh your options and have your priorities in line. Good luck with your choice.

natureboyfloyd Report post Posted July 20, 2009 I made a ghillie last year. Took a cotton hunting frock from my flintlock blackpowder days, dyed walnut tan/kakhi. Attached army wool green , tan and grey-green strips, worked it all over with some acrylic paint. Awesome. Birds, including hawks, come in real close. I use a 30-30 open sights rifle, and so like the camo when still hunting. Try it. An aside....using the jacket, really makes me think about using the shadows and saplings. I like to place a dead, fallen branch over my legs if feasible.
punkrcker1344 Report post Posted August 1, 2009 I bought one a few years back at bass pro and i really like it. I dont have to be in a blind just sit up against some shrubs or a tree and the deer come in alot closer than with out one. I would recomend it if you have a couple of spots but dont have time to make a blind.
