AZ RANGER Report post Posted July 17, 2009 I finally saved enough cash to add another camera to my collection. I am going to buy a covert but can't decide which one to get. Has anyone used both? Is the covert II worth the extra $$ Thanks
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted July 17, 2009 I use both and I like both. Essentially they have the same capabilities with video and photos, although the 2 extra LED lights on the Covert 2 get you a little brighter night pics. Some people just like the looks of the Covert 2 better. If you think you would like to use a tripod or the Tree-60 camera mount to put your cams on, then you have to use the Covert 2 because it has the threaded hole on the bottom and the Covert 1 doesn't. There is a camo version of the Covert 1 available now. I will post a pic when I get one. It will be a little more expensive than the green Covert 1, but you might like the looks of it better. Both the Covert 1 and 2 use the same remote to program them and the same SD card and all that. I like the Covert 1 because I can just set it down on the ground since it has a flat bottom. But I also like the ability of the Covert 2 to thread onto the tree-60. Amanda
tjhunt2 Report post Posted July 18, 2009 Do they sell a solar panel that connects to both the covertI & covertII? I know the batteries last a long time but some times I can't get to check my cameras for several weeks. This will be a big decision on buying one of these. TJ Yes, you are supposed to be able to use a solar panel with these cams. I haven't tried it out, but there is a plug inlet on the bottom of the covert 1 and 2 that is supposed to allow for external power. I think you would get the moultrie solar panel and hook it to an external battery and then run wires from that battery to the plug-in on the cam. Since the AA batteries can last a couple months, I don't know why you would bother. The lithium batteries are supposed to last even longer than the alkalines. I just got a set of lithiums but haven't tested them out. Amanda
tjhunt2 Report post Posted July 18, 2009 Thanks Amanda. I think I asked you this question the last time I saw you but had forgotten what you said. Nothing to do with age I hope. TJ
Gr8 White Jr Report post Posted July 18, 2009 Are the extra LED lights the only difference in the two cameras other than the mounting options? Are they basicly the same camera as far as technical features? -Tracy
ruthunter Report post Posted July 19, 2009 Are the pics from a covert 1 sd card only viewable through a computer and tv? Can you take the sd card out of the covert and put it in a normal camera to view photos?
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted July 19, 2009 Are the extra LED lights the only difference in the two cameras other than the mounting options? Are they basicly the same camera as far as technical features? -Tracy The PIR sensor is a different and a little wider in the Covert 2. The case design is different (side opening rather than bottom and includes a rubber gasket). Some people like that case design for easier access to the batteries. The Covert 2 also comes with an SD card whereas the Covert 1 doesn't. And then the 2 extra LEDs and threaded hole in the bottom are the other differences of the Covert 2 vs Covert 1. Other than that they are pretty much the same. They both can be set to take 3 megapixel or 5 megapixel images. Both have the same video capabilities and they have the same options for changing sensitivity, video length, number of pics, delays between triggers, etc. Amanda
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted July 19, 2009 Are the pics from a covert 1 sd card only viewable through a computer and tv? Can you take the sd card out of the covert and put it in a normal camera to view photos? I would say generally you can take the SD card out and use it in your camera to view photos. That's what I do for both the Covert 1 and 2. However, RedRabbit just informed me he wasn't able to preview images from his Covert SD card in his high end digital SLR. I don't know if all SLRs are like that or just the one he has. I use the SD card in my little point and shoot digital and it works great for reviewing photos. I have a Canon Powershot. But you can always see more details on the computer at home, so I take an extra SD card and swap them out so I can view the images larger on my computer. CouesWhitetail Report post Posted July 19, 2009 I am also not able to view my pics through a canon or nikon camera only through my computer...does anybody know why? What type of canon do you have? My guess would be your camera doesn't recognize the formating that the Covert uses to format the card? Amanda
JMP Report post Posted July 19, 2009 in my nikon it's because when i put the sd card into the camera it creates a new folder in which it will store data, and only reads from that folder. i can take the card out, plug it into the computer, and then select the folder from the trail camera. There might be a way to navigate on your nikon to the trail cam folder. I know my canon allows me to create folders (which I never do) to organize images. You might check your manual if you haven't already and see if there is something you can do to view that other folder. Sometimes it's just a default to read the folder it created, but you might be able to change that default or just navigate to the other folder somehow. My Canon seems to create a folder also, but I think it only does this when I actually take photos with the camera. But when I just put the SD card in with trail cam images it just reads those images. Amanda Not only can I view with my camera, I also format the cards with it before installing. Works great every time. I was impressed with the sensitivity of my Covert 1. I picked up a doe who just barely peeked her head into the photo! I set it up so that I could try and take some photos from further away this week so we will see how far it can reach! Those who can't read the cards with their cameras, try formatting them in the viewing camera before installing in the Covert. They are saved as JPG so if you can't read them, it is a directory issue. Do you only format the cards on your regular camera and not in the Covert? Still works in the Covert OK? What brand/model camera do you use to view the pics?
