CouesWhitetail Report post Posted July 17, 2009 My dear husband and I took the dogs for a walk early this morning and enjoyed the sunrise. We also happened to find three young barn owls who live in a mine shaft. That was a neat find. I am thinking of putting a trail cam up on the site to get some video of adults feeding young. Sunrise over Chiricahua Butte.....what a treat! As we went by the mine shaft (we always have to put Julie on a leash around this one since she is very likely to just run around and fall in!), my husband says, maybe we should check and see if any Barn Owls use this mine. About a minute later he says he sees some peeking up at him. I go over and see three young owls on a ledge all peering up at me. Hard to get good photos because it was dark in there, but they were fun to see. They didn't hiss at us but they did fly to the other side of shaft to avoid us. This mine has a very strong wood structure that still covers most of the opening, providing good shade for the owls. And it has little alcoves where they can tuck away also. Looks like a great spot for them. CouesWhitetail Report post Posted July 17, 2009 Beautiful sunrise but those owls look kinda scary! They are kinda gargoyle-like, aren't they? You should hear them. The adults have this scream that will make you jump out of your skin. I was sleeping outside on some cots with my husband once and we had one fly onto a cliff by our heads and shriek, I thought a mountain lion was about to jump on our heads by the sound of it!! Wow, that wakes you up in a hurry! Amanda
