BRYCE CANYON Report post Posted July 15, 2009 (edited) Anybody have a favorite load for their 7MM RUM? I am shooting a Remington Sendero with a Night Force 5.5X22 scope and I am having trouble getting it to shoot like I want. The best load so far is 168 gr Berger VLD with 92 grains of Retumbo. It will shoot 1" groups at 100 yards but I would like to get them all in the same hole. 162 gr. Hornady A-Max with 86 grains of RL 25 also does well but not what I am looking for as far as one hole groups. 150 gr. Scirroco and Nosler BT with 86-88 grains of RL 25 do not do well at all. Let me know if you have a favorite load you would like to share. Thanks Edited July 15, 2009 by BRYCE CANYON
scottk Report post Posted July 15, 2009 When I get home I will take a look at our loads for the exact data. I have only worked up 3 loads: 160grn Nosler Partition 160grn Nosler Ballistic Tip 140grn Nosler Ballistic Tip I know we are shooting the IMR Powder in 7828 with the Gold Match Magnum Primers. I am not sure if I still have the velocities written down or not still. We were under 1" at 100 yds. I can't remember if we measured it with a micrometer or not but it seems like it was around .8" its not the same hole in hole like you asked but I am probably not as good of a shot as that. I didnt test it on the bench or in a vise. We changed the load in 1/4 grn increments and if I remember correctly at 84 or 85grns the velocity actually started decreasing slightly. This was before I had a break put on. I am not sure if the break will effect this as its the first one I have had put on a rifle but I was told it may change the muzzle velocity some???? I am shooting the same rifle as you. Mine has a 26" barrel. I am not sure if they had different options for barrel length most of the reloading data is with a 24" barrel. I hope this helps. I saw a couple of other sites have some reloading data for them as well. I think it was the long distance shooting type websites. You might check those out. Best of luck. Coues Sniper Report post Posted July 16, 2009 I can't help you with any loads for the 7 RUM, but have you tried ReloadersNest or LongRangeHunting.com? Those would be my first couple places to look.
GameHauler Report post Posted July 16, 2009 Before you disregard your Berger loads take them out to 200-300yds and check groups. there are many that feel it really takes the Bergers a couple hundred yards to stableize. Even with a unstable bullet at 100 yds grouping like that is meat on the table. They really shine at long range
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted July 16, 2009 Try H4831sc and thank me later.
catclaw Report post Posted July 16, 2009 Anybody have a favorite load for their 7MM RUM? It will shoot 1" groups at 100 yards but I would like to get them all in the same hole. Wouldn't we all! That is an unrealistic expectation for any rifle, especially an over-bore factory rifle! In fact, 1" groups out of a factory rifle are BETTER than what Remington will guarantee. You might be able to get them to shoot a little better than that but then again, maybe not. If you are looking for a truly long range load, try your best load at 200, 300 and 500 yds and see what you get. My 260 Remington will barely break an inch @ 100 but when I shot it at 500 last this week, it shot under 3" which is close to 1/2 MOA. If you want to shoot one-hole groups, start with flat base light bullets. I would suggest a 140 grain or lighter. Not what you want for long range, but what it takes to get really small groups at 100 yds. If you want to go really fast, don't complain when your Corvette gets hung up on a rocky dirt road, If you want to go all over rough country, don't complain when your 4x4 can't do 120! Over bore rifles are VERY hard to get to shoot good. Sorry.
justanotherpunk Report post Posted July 16, 2009 keep working loads. H4831sc and hornady 139 GR SP's. i know this bullet won't be at the top of everyones list but they shoot well in all of my rifles and perform in the field excellent. Haven't yet had a "over-bore" Remington that wouldn't shoot sub 1" moa. I wouldn't worry about the rifle itself. There are other factors that can help increase accuracy nobody has mentioned. Trigger, floating the barrel (although I 'm not sure this factory stock doesn't have an aluminum bed and isn't already floated), etc.
308Nut Report post Posted July 17, 2009 1 hole groups at 100 yards in a factory 7mm RUM is not realistic. If you want ragged one hole groups, I would suggest a different caliber and or custom rifle combination. The 7RUM is capable of phenominal accuracy if it built properly. Just dont excpect premium accuracy out of it in a factory version. That said, I am sure you can beat the 1 MOA youre getting now. you will need to try more powders. Look at H50BMG and stick to the 168 VLD or the 162 AMAX. Also try the 180 Berger VLD. Pick your best load and be happy with it. If the best you can do with it is 1 MOA then be happy. You may be suprised what she'll do a bit further out. IMHO H4831 is a way too fast a powder for the 7RUM, at least with the heavier bullets.

Scott Thanks for your help Scott. Sorry about the poor picture quality. 81 Grains of IMR 7828 with a 160 grain accubond worked great for me.
scottk Report post Posted August 18, 2009 I am glad that it worked out for you. Looks like a nice group. Sorry I didnt get the exact load data for you. I have been out of town quite a bit lately. I will ask my dad in the morning and try to post it. I think it is a great rifle and caliber. While out of town I was in Wyoming. I always wonder what will happen if I forget my ammo on an out of state hunt because this isnt a popular round. So in Wyoming I stopped by several stores, fly fishing and walmarts to see what they had available. I was amazed at the ammo selections at all of the stores. They had a better selection than anywhere here in Tucson. Heck Walmart even had reloading supplies in Laramie. If I had not been flying I would have stocked up a bit. Just an fyi my buddy is shooting the same powder in his .300 RUM with great results.
Flash Report post Posted August 20, 2009 I shoot a Remington M700 and I got to say the factory Core_lokt PSP 150gr. shoots great out of it, not to mention as proven leathal for deer and elk. The same loads shoot really well out of an old mossberg 7mm I had. I have tried several other combinations have haven't found any as accurate, regardless of price. Good luck
