Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 12, 2009 Remove the bolt, put the rifle in a rest, center a distant object (eg. corner of window frame or roof of house across the street) in the middle of the bore while looking through the barrel, and turn the scope dials so the reticle is aligned on the object. Just as accurate as a bore sighter to get you on paper. If you are way off left to right, adjust the windage screws on the rear base first (if you do not have dual dovetail rings/bases) before turning the scope dial. When you go shoot, put the first target at 25 yards and the bullet should be on paper to allow you to center and then shoot at 100 yards. Doug~RR
krp Report post Posted July 13, 2009 Doug is the man as usual. If at the range just put a round target at 100 yds, center looking through your barrel. Dial your cross hairs until they are centered also always making sure you didn't move the gun any. When the barrel is centered and the scope is centered, shoot, you'll be within 8 inchs easy, usually less at 100. Kent

whiteeye Report post Posted August 10, 2009 Take it to Sportsmans and have them do it for FREE......... (No you don't have to have bought the gun there. At least they have never charged me.) That will get you on paper. Then goto the range and dial it in.
youngbuck Report post Posted August 10, 2009 I do the same as RR but I try and get some butcher paper to cover the cardboard at the range. It makes it alot easier to see where I'm hitting if I'm off the small paper target.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted August 10, 2009 YB, The new butcher paper behind the sight-in target is a good idea. I do the same behind the target face when shooting longer ranges. RR

Doug~RR I my experence, once your centered at 25yds it usually hits the same at 100yds, saving alot of time and money. I try and mark out 25 yds at the house using the same method as Doug and always end up inside the target at 25yds. I would have do disagree with going to Sportsmans! Last two I had them mount, ended up cantered and wouldn't hit paper at 100yds! I ended up remounting the scope and using the method that Doug stated with no problems. If you have the money buy the laser bore sight chamberd for your gun. Its a great way to get things lined up and check things in the field before the hunt. If you do get one, buy the one that you can use on different guns by adding the outer adapter case to the .223 base. Its really easy to change from one caliber to the other. I center my scope first (windage and elevation nobs centered) then move the rear scope base for windage. For elvation if its way off I shim it in front or back but rarely is it going to be that far off. Only if it is feet off the target. At 25 yards I am usually within 6 inches. It is very easy to do. I'm a ways away, in the White Mountains, but I have a laser bore sighter and would be happy to do it for you if you're ever up this way. Just glad to help if I can. scoutpylot Report post Posted September 4, 2009 I bought the Kryptonite system from Laserlyte (an AWESOME Arizona company!!! Cottonwood to be specific). This kit includes a green laser that can be seen in the daylight at thirty yards or more. I have bore sighted 8 rifles with this system and have been very pleased. Each rifle was at least on an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper at 100 yards. You get a level to square the rifle to the earth. Then rectifier that shines a level line to square the scope to perfectly level. Then a green dot to dial the scope to. There are a couple of videos for this system on the company's web site.
