BRYCE CANYON Report post Posted June 28, 2009 My kids and I spent a week in the Uintahs with Mike Palmer and his brothers. We had a great time and got to see some new country. The Uintahs are the largest East-West mountain range outside of the Brooks Range in Alaska. The High Uintah Wilderness was created by Congress in 1984 and is known for its rugged mountains and extreme weather. Kings Peak is the highest point in Utah at 13,528 feet We went in at Roosevelt Utah right after a heavy rain. Mike's Ford Power Stroke would not shift into four wheel drive so after it slid into the ditch and cleared the road, my Dodge was able to get by and go right on up the mountain. We spent a cold night at the White Rocks-West Fork Trailhead. We never got below 10,000 feet the rest of the week. The trail over Fox Pass and got into a very rough shale/rock field. The trail was just a "ditch" with the larger rocks thrown to the side. "Sally", a forty year old mule went down in the trail due a lack of oxygen/alltitude sickness. The horse behind her had an anxiety attack due to the confined space and began bucking and thrashing around before flipping over and falling down facing the wrong way. Both animals were exhausted and would not move. After a quick prayer and some pushing and pulling, we got them back on their feet and over the pass. Due to it being "late in the season" we only encountered about a foot of snow in the pass. After a 20 mile ride into the wilderness, we made camp and took it easy for a couple of days. There are hundreds of lakes in the area which are full of hungry fish! You can see Kings Peak behind us in this photo. We had a great time and I would recommend this trip to anyone! SilentButDeadly Report post Posted June 28, 2009 Awesome!! I was up in the Uinta a few years ago for work. Great fishing for sure, even saw some elk up around 10,000. Really amazing mountain range. We worked over in Pole Creek SE of King's peak.

COUESAZ Report post Posted June 29, 2009 My uncle back packs it all the time with his team of goats. He is always telling me to come along. I need to take him up on it before he does not go anymore do to his age. Kirk we lost a couple horses once packing into powers cabin. We were lucky the kids were able to jump before the two horse went over the edge of the bluff on the shell rock. Horse rides never are just horse rides right. Then you go and throw a mule or two in the picture and all heck can break out. A horse never remembers that rodeos are suposed to take place in the arena.
