CouesKilla Report post Posted June 28, 2009 I put in for an early strip tag this year and was wondering if anyone has pics of good deer they shot on this early hunt. I've been reading a bit about the hunt, and obviously the bigger deer are taken on the late hunt. Just wanting to see what I can possibly look forward to. CouesKilla Report post Posted June 28, 2009 I put in for 12AW. Sorry, I thought everything north of the Grand Canyon was considered the "strip". I was just reading how the major part of the migration doesn't happen until later in November. I'm sure there are some there in Early November, but just not sure how many. jbone Report post Posted June 28, 2009 migration or not there is always the same amount of deer in 12aw, they migrate from summer range to winter range (both are in the unit you put in for) give or take a few deer. The Kaibab is just a lot easier to hunt if they have moved to the winter range, you can glass if they have dropped out of the firs, aspens and pines. but for the numbers migration has nothing to do with it, they are in 12aw migration or not. CouesKilla Report post Posted June 28, 2009 Oh, that's good to hear. Pending the migration, that will determine if I hunt high or low. I was under the impression they summered in an area outside the unit. Do deer migrate south out of Utah into this unit, or do they all come off the Grand Canyon Rim? Red Rabbit Report post Posted June 28, 2009 Technically, 12 & 13 comprise the strip, but most hunters think of only 13 as being the strip. UT migration effects 12b mostly. Hope you draw the 12aw tag. The big deer are there during the early hunt also, just need to work and scout harder. Perhaps % more younger bucks are taken during the early hunt because the hunters view the hunts differently and hold expectations differently.
AZbowhntr Report post Posted June 29, 2009 I had the early tag a few years ago and although we saw literally 100's of deer and several bucks better than what I ended up taking I was running out of time and this buck came out at the wrong time and place. He came out about 35 yds from where I was set up glassing. The G&F's main objective on the early hunt is to thin out the little bucks and that is mostly what is taken. So you will see tons of them. You just have to be patient and wait for something that is within your limits. Good luck on drawing a tag.
CouesKilla Report post Posted June 29, 2009 Very nice deer. It's also good to hear you saw some bigger bucks. Now I'm slightly fired up.
AZWildcat Report post Posted June 30, 2009 This is from 07....the last year for over the counter archery. If you get away from the roads and people you can run into some big bucks
AZWildcat Report post Posted June 30, 2009 I know not rifle, but they are in the same general area for the early rife tag.
