Bowstrings

Recommended Posts

The problem with knowing a bow is out of tune is that it usually happens so slowly that its impossible to tell. That is why there are the rules of thumb, such as new string every two years. I personally have a Bucknasty and it is every bit as good as the Winners Choice I have used in the past but I got it for $70 instead of the $130 that WC are up to now. I guess having all of the hunting "celebrities" on the payroll raises your prices, but dont think it raises your quality.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to get the string changed while I'm on vacation. Ross is going to do the work for me. I'm going to go with America's Best as that is what they recommended and shoot.

If something seems funky I'll get it changed before the Nov. hunt.

That's just the thing, by the time you notice something funky it's usually over right there. If your out in the field when it goes south your hunt is over.

Think of it this way, if you replace the string then you'll have your stock one as a back up if anything happens. As we all know nothing ever bad happens on the range, only out in the field at the worst time possible.

I change the oil in my truck every 3-5K and my bow string every year.

Examine it thoroughly, if no major wear and tear exists and you are shooting broad heads how you want, then I would leave it alone. Once you make adjustments to your bowstring you will usually have to re tune your bow even if just a small amount. If you are not happy with the tune of your bow or looking at changing something anyway THEN I would replace it with a better string. I had the zebra string on my XT for about 3 months and then put winners choice on it and was impressed immediately and shot more consistently. I just hate messing with my bow unless I got plenty of time to make it right before I hunt.

+1

change your string after season and when you have lots of time to get it re-tuned.

Got my bow back yesterday. Got a green and black string. 3 shots and I was dead on at 20 yds. Thanks to David at Ross Outdoors for all his help and patience with me. Thanks everyone for all your responses, I guess it is that important. Now to start practicing again.
