skeeter Report post Posted June 22, 2009 Hey guys, need some advice. I am looking to buy a gps device and was wondering if you all have any suggestions as for ease of use. Just want it to help from getting lost in unfamiliar country, not any of that fancy stuff. Thx Jed
IHunt2live Report post Posted June 22, 2009 Jed, We have been using the Garmin 60CSx with topo maps loaded on it at work and I have realy liked them. easy to use but not cheap.
azshtr Report post Posted June 22, 2009 I use the etrex legend with maps loaded. It is an older one however and the current version that takes a chip is the venture I believe. You want the chip model to add the detailed topo maps. The etrex is a lot cheaper than the 60 series. The 60 series has more features. Etrex does what I need. CouesWhitetail Report post Posted June 22, 2009 etrex is probably the smallest, easiest and cheapest. Seems like it would be a fine unit for you.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted June 22, 2009 Be sure to get a unit with the newer, High-sensitivity WAAS receivers that get a signal better under the trees and in canyons. With the Garmin units, there will usually be an H in the model designation.
Coach Report post Posted June 22, 2009 +1 for the Garmin Etrex. You can get the Legend HCx (high sensitivity, color display) for under $200 right now, plus another $109 for all 1:24000 maps of AZ, CO, NM and UT. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=6015173 http://www.gpsnow.com/Garmin_010-11315-00.htm I have an older Etrex Vista that has been a very good unit for 12+ years, but I'll probably replace it with the Legend HCx soon. The legend is the same unit without the digital compass and barometric altimiter, neither of which I found particularly useful.

This is the one I use... http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=6015173 I have had several etrex units over the years. I agree that the compass feature was not useful for me either. The NG topos are good. One other item I would add... I am a huge REI fan for many things because the return policy is fantastic. I had two etrex unit go bad. This was after many, many trips in the field and abuse of Jeeping, hunting, fishing, getting dropped etc. Both times they started acting up I returned them to REI and they refunded me the original price, then I bought a new one. Both times the new models had come out and the refund allowed the purchase of a better unit with more features.

Arizona Griz Report post Posted June 24, 2009 The Garmin etrex Legend that is on sale now at Bass Pro is the older version that is being phased out. I have had two and the only reason I don't have them now is the fact that one was stolen and the other was broken in an ATV wreck. They are not the high sensivity antenna type but work just fine. They have 8mb of memory space. The newer Legend had the new high sensitive antenna and a few newer features including 24mb of memory. I bought mine on line for $130 plus shipping from GPSCity.
