azhuntnut Report post Posted June 16, 2009 My truck was broken into again yesterday for the second time in six months. The theives are hitting the big parking lots looking for anything they can grab quick out of the truck. I think they are seeing the outdoor stickers on the back of trucks and hitting them hoping to find firearms inside. Both times they have punched the key tumbler out with a screw driver and opened the door right up. I even watched them do it on recorded video at Cabelas one time. Last time they got nothing, but this time they got my GPS and one magazine for my Glock. I am installing an item I found called the Jimmi Jammer to prevent the tumbler from being punched out. Hopefully this will slow them down a bit next time. I figure its cheap insurance compared to what I am spending to replace the handle and tumbler. billrquimby Report post Posted June 16, 2009 My wife and I have had three vehicles stolen over our lifetimes. The first was a 1950 Willy's Jeepster that was taken in 1955 by joyriders and recovered two days later without being damaged. The last two were pre-2000 GM vehicles, which were said at the time to be the easiest for car thieves to drive away. All that was required was a heavy screwdriver to smash a window and rip off the steering column shroud. Once the shroud was out of the way, the car could be started and driven away by pushing something under the shroud. In 1998, my six-month-old Chevrolet 4x4 pickup along with my secretary's five-year Jeep Cherokee were stolen from the parking lot in front of the SCI offices in broad daylight and driven into Sonora. Witnesses said an old car drove up, two young Hispanic men jumped out and broke into our vehicles, and then drove away -- all this in just seconds. A year later, an official at the U.S. embassy in Hermosillo called me to say the federales had turned my truck over to his office. By then, though, the truck belonged to my insurance company. A couple of years after that, my wife's Cadillac was stolen from our home and wrecked in what the police say was a gang initiation. Her car was just one of five GM vehicles the same two punks stole and crashed that night. They had used my wife's car to ram a security guard's truck a mile from us, and then burned up its engine while racing away with a smashed radiator. Before the engine froze up, they hit a road-construction area at more than 75 mph, bounced off something and flew up onto a 10-foot-high berm and got stuck in the sand. They left it, ran to an apartment complex, stole another GM vehicle, and got away. The attitude of the Tucson Police Department, Pima County Sheriff's Office, and the Arizona Highway Patrol was that having a vehicle stolen was (ho-hum) something that happened to everyone and was no big deal because our insurance company would cover our losses. To its credit, Farmers insurance was more than fair in both instances. Bill Quimby
youngbuck Report post Posted June 16, 2009 My dad put some jimmy jammers in his truck; 04 silverado, ans no one has tried breaking in yet. He also put the little stickers right there on the windows so they could see it. I have a 1990 chevy that was broken into w/ a large screw driver to steal stereo equipment about 6 years ago. az4life Report post Posted June 20, 2009 Sounds like the security of GM needs help in more than monetary instances. Now that it's Government Motors, I'm betting they will throw some stimulus money to come up with a solution instead of the jimmy jammers. Probably an extra grand or so but hey, it's the government's solution so it has to be good!
azhuntnut Report post Posted June 23, 2009 I just wanted to add that a friend of mine got his Dodge hit on Saturday night while in a restaurant. They managed to steal his pistol. It seems like to are targeting trucks with any type of outdoor stickers or license plates on the back. David
DUG Report post Posted June 23, 2009 It sucks that you can't even go out to eat and there is someone around to mess with your truck. If I have a gun in my vehicle someone stays with the truck or it is always in sight if we go in somewhere. I had to leave my FJ unlocked in Flagstaff because the dog was in it and setting off the alarm. I made sure I was only about 4 seconds from the truck if one of those hobos tried to take anything.
