savagman Report post Posted June 12, 2009 I hunted the October hunt in 34A last year and shot my first Coues. He was a little guy but after 4 days of hunting hard I was happy to fill my tag (not to mention the meat has been tender and delicious). During that hunt I took a short hike into the wilderness area and saw some promising country and the biggest bear I have ever seen. I put that hunt as my 2nd choice this year as draw odds are very good. If I get drawn for this unit I am thinking of backpacking into the wilderness and setting up a small camp to hunt out of. Anyone have any tips, trails to hike in on, or experience hunting wilderness? I plan to do a fair bit of hiking and scouting this summer and would appreciate any information that will help me get started. Also have some questions about trail cameras. Is it ok to place them and return a week or two later to retrieve them? Anyone had theft or vandalism issues? I would like to hike in and place a few on springs and retrieve them or replace batteries in a week or two. Thanks, Eric
AZP&Y Report post Posted June 13, 2009 Eric, You can't go wrong with the Arizona Trail. It runs smack through the wilderness and is some prime access. Great to hear someone willing to stretch there legs away from the quad and see what backcountry hunting can be. Send me a PM and I'll shoot you some primo pics and a water source that is NEVER dry. Oh and yes , you may see a bear or 2 34A is a unit that I've spent some time in... Hope that you have a lion tag as well (BOOM). Check out http://www.aztrail.org/passages/pass_04.html(you won't be disappointed). AzP&Y Doug
tjhunt2 Report post Posted June 13, 2009 I just met a guy that hunts this unit and his buddy shot a bear last week and he is to hunt it when he gets back from Rosey fishing. He lives in the unit and sounds like he knows it well. TJ
