AZP&Y Report post Posted June 12, 2009 I checked the cams and noticed these 2 Muleys that are in real ROUGH shape. One of the younger does seems to have black spots covering the entire body - they look almost like cysts. The other mature Doe appears to be pregnant, but something is not right with the protrusion. Calling all biologists or anyone that may have an idea what is wrong with these deer? I graduated college , but my degree was not in biology I'm going to consult my book- Deer of the Southwest tonight and see if I can 'shed' some light on these sickly muleys. The dates and times are correct on the cameras. Thanks for any insite or knowledge. I am always curious about these things when I'm looking through my pics. bowhunter4life Report post Posted June 12, 2009 I called back 7-8 years ago about some mulies with the same black grows. I was told by the g-f that was due to water and the drought we were having. the younger deer looked alot like the ones we called about.
kdog Report post Posted June 12, 2009 The other one appears to have a hernia.
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted June 12, 2009 They look like fibrous tumors, which do not really cause a problem for the health the of the deer. They don't involve any internal organs, just the skin. And unless they are in locations that interfere with feeding or locomotion or vision, they don't tend to cause problems. I used to see these alot in Eastern deer. Don't see it so much out West. COUESAZ Report post Posted June 12, 2009 A friend of mine killed one in 32 a few years ago. It was loaded with those tumors.
AZP&Y Report post Posted June 13, 2009 Thanks for the replys everyone... Amanda that is some fascinating information. Appreciate the links. AZCOUES- was it a whitetail that your friend killed with the tumors or a Muley (just curious)...? I am going to watch this deer through the summer and see if there is any progression of the tumors... deernut Report post Posted June 16, 2009 I'm in WI on vacation but Amanda alerted me to this post. These dark warts are definately papillomas (aka fibromas). I have a picture and explaination in my book, but they are basically warts caused by a virus and will usually go away by themselves. They do not affect the meat. The other large furry growth does look like a herniation of the abdominal wall. No way of knowing for sure, but it can be a hole in the muscular wall that has allowed the "guts" to bulge out or it could be a fur-covered fibroma or other large growth. I've seen things like this filled with infected tissue or fat. Jim
COUESAZ Report post Posted June 28, 2009 The tumors on the deer my friend killed were likr the big bulge on the belly of the deer in the photo. He had about a hundred tumors like that all over its body. We sliced one in half and it was a fatty tissue. They wer from the size of a quarter to the size of a softball. Guest RutNHard Report post Posted July 2, 2009 I think if I killed a deer with those tumors It would be very hard for me to choke down the meat. I would probably just donate it as long as it was safe and I love deer meat especially Jalapeno and Cheese Summer Sausage!!!
