Melendrez Fire

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a map or know where to get a map showing the area that was burned by the Melendrez fire? Apparently no one working for the government (aka the Forest Service) has one or knows of them being released. I've seen them before some I know the FS releases such maps. One guy actually told me I need to file a Freedom of Information Act paper work for.....dang I didn't know this was "top secret" info. head shaking

Tomorrow I'll be going out and doing some walking around. I think I can just drive out Box Canyon road and stop somewhere. I'll let you know what I find.

When the fire was at it's largest, they had box canyon blocked off to traffic.. That is, unless you're in a marked GOV!! I got to go back there and got within 100 yards of the fire as it made it's way northward to Box canyon rd.. It was IMPRESSIVE to be that close to a wildfire.. I was Uin awe watching it eat brush at an amazing rate.

Talked to the firefighters backburning the blaze from the road said this fire was 99% great for all of the habitiat. Couldn't have happened at a better time. In a few weeks the rains will start and that place will be coues HEAVEN!!

They typically do not map fires unless they have an incident management team on the fire. The best thing to do is goout before green up and take some topo maps and map it your self. They used existing roads to stop the fire, so it should not be to hard to drive around it and figure out what burned. It looks like they used the box canyon road and the helvitia road as control lines.

Well I drove over Box Canyon road this morning. They did stop the fire at the road. I didn't see any burn north of the road. The east end of the fire they stopped at the trail head just west of the fork of Melendrez road and Box Canyon road. Here are some pictures.
