Flash Report post Posted June 6, 2009 I was just wondering if the "no placing attractents out" rule turned official or what happened with that. I remember a while back there was a lot of discussion on it. Can you place out a salt lick with a camera or is that against the law? A couple guys at work want to set one out to test a new trail cam. TAM Report post Posted June 7, 2009 It was put on the back burner for awhile. For now it's still ok to use salt.

bowsniper Report post Posted June 13, 2009 Unfortunately, it has not gone away. All state rule changes have been on hold until Gov. Brewer could get her appointees into their jobs. On June 30, the hold is over, and G&F will start working the bait issue again. The rumors are that they plan to re-write the ban slightly to clarify that it does not apply to water, and then present it to the commission for a vote in October. The kicker is that G&F is not legally obligated to publish the re-written rule before it goes to the commission for a vote. G&F is saying that they "might" post the re-written rule on some hunting websites a week or two before the vote. It will be a short fuse to fight it, but if you guys can crank out the emails to the commissioners like you did before, we might have a chance. Stay tuned. Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted June 14, 2009 never have I ever put salt. But since it is not illegal i guess i will try it. Whether you use it as a scouting tool... or a method of hunting, the implications that are tied in with banning of minerals (or any "bait") could potentially and probably will affect ALL hunters. I for one have used salt as a scouting toolmany times... but I have never harvested a single game animal off of salt.... however, so many water holes, trick tanks, springs, etc. in AZ have salt on them that these locations could be potentially illegal to hunt depending on how a WM was to "interpret" a new law... ... Not to mention the leverage that Aniti's would now have to sabotage hunts if they were to start combatting us with salt and grain.... More over complicating the lives of the ranchers as well.... we all know that if you make it a pain in the butt to have hunters on the ranch lands, then even more gates will be locked. No matter what your take is on "Baiting" we all lose if this law or anything like it gets passed in this state. There are many ways to control the REAL Issue at hand in this debate.... one very simple and cost effective way would be for the AZGF and the USFS to (I know-"Keep Dreaming") work together and enforce/ticket for littering and the importation of non-native species (ie. spreading mass quanities of grains/seed).... we have laws already in place that can and will impact/check the real issue at hand... Why would any hunter support a law that could have serious reprocusions in many hunting situations.... Example..... Early rifle bull tag.... big herd of elk in a meadow near a tank.... Big herd bull running off rag heads and rutting cows... you shoot when the bull clears the group and he drops in his tracks...WHOOO HOOOO!! You are over there taking pictures and begining to field dress the bull when a WM comes driving up the road, sees you, stops and walks over..... "Hey great bull!".... "Thanks!"..... "Hey, umm, you do understand that I am gunna have to take your bull as soon as you have finished up field dressing him right?" "What!! You ARE kidding right????" "No Sir...You see this established salt lick right here 20 feet from your bull? From what I can see here you shot this bull on bait and that is in direct violation of A.R.S...Blah Blah..... and I will have to ticket you and confiscate this animal."...... Any law like this implies that you had better know (be clairvoyant) where your animal is gunna hit the dirt or you better be able to prove your case in court and be able to afford a good attorney. Be carefull you all.... divide and conquer... that is the name of the game for those that hate our sport. Support the Enforcement of the existing laws in place and Oppose More Laws that further complicate things for all hunters!!! All for one and one for all!!! bowsniper has been at the forefront of the fight for hunter's rights on this topic and is one of the most educated about what is going on with it. I'd encourage you all to PM him and get a copy of the Really Great Flyier that he has put togther and do your part to help spread it around to all your friends and hunters that you know in an effort to eduacate everyone on how to get their voice heard on this topic while someone is listening.... make no mistake that every voice counts on this topic!!! The Commissioners are very eager to hear from the public on this topic.... do your part and be a hunter's rights advocate! Regardless of how you hunt, laws like this affect us ALL!!!! cramerhunts Report post Posted June 14, 2009 I too use salt for scouting/trail cams but have never taken an animal over it, but as bowsniper and C&S said that's not the real issue at hand. I will be sending my e-mails and passing the word along to everyone that might listen to fight this when the time comes. Phil
Coach Report post Posted June 15, 2009 Keep up the fight. It's pretty clear that they have heard us and are not yet ready to drop the "mineral" aspect of this proposal. Just think about how easy it would be for the anti's to buy a few bags of salt and make just about every accessible water tank illegal to hunt. Think I'm exaggerating? They've done it in other parts of the country by scattering grain around well known migratory bird waters, making it ILLEGAL to hunt around those areas. We can't let this slip through while we're busy with other things. If this rule gets enacted, it will affect us all whether we hunt over salt or not. Get involved, make your voice heard and FIGHT this thing. Gino is right on the money here - you may not even be hunting directly over salt, but if this gets passed, it will be on YOU to make sure there is no salt anywhere near where you are. That's a huge feat - I've seen many situations where people have 'staked out areas' that are salted that I've intended to hunt and never knew that their established salt licks were nearby, until they spoke up in one way or another. If Gino's illustration isn't convincing enough, try this. You find a little saddle with converging game trails and set up your stand. Somebody else knows you are hunting those trails, dumps out a little salt and calls you in for hunting over bait. Now it's up to you to defend yourself, IN COURT, that you didn't know there was bait in the area. This is a lose-lose for hunters, and we have to do everything in our power to fight it tooth and nail. Gino, you sent me some info earlier about where I could send donations for this fight. I got lazy and lost it - can you repost the information so that we can all put our $$ where our mouth is and fight this thing. We've already lost so much in this state in the diminished rut coues hunts and blocked access to public land. Somewhere, we have to make a stand, and this is it. ACT NOW!!! Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted June 15, 2009 Jason, Anyone who contacts bowsniper (Mark) can get involved. Whether it be by internet circulation as I did or by donation as many others have done. Mark is very passionate about this topic and has donated tons of his own time and money to supporting this cause and he could use our help!!!! The only way that the voices get heard is if everyone speaks.... as Jason mentioned..... ACT NOW!!! Don't think this does not affect you.... it could affect you in more ways than you can imagine!!! BTW....Mark..... I have 300 stamps for you!!! I will send them with Mike O. next time I see him!!
bowsniper Report post Posted June 15, 2009 Gino is right on the money here - you may not even be hunting directly over salt, but if this gets passed, it will be on YOU to make sure there is no salt anywhere near where you are. Not only salt, but grain too. The anti's can shut down your favorite water hole for your season just by dumping a few bags of grain around it. Not only could you lose your animal and be fined, but you would lose your hunting license for 5 years. The commission has really clamped down on violations, and are revoking hunting licenses for 5 years for almost any violation, from poaching an animal, to taking one too many quail, to littering while hunting. You can check it out for yourself: http://www.azgfd.gov/inside_azgfd/meeting_minutes.shtml under License Revocations. The point is that even if you don't use salt, or even if you use salt but not feed, any "baiting" rule will affect us all. If you only hunt water, think about how all the hunters that can't use bait any more will descend on "your" water hole. We can't let G&F divide the bait users form the non-bait users, they conquer us all. Mark
