Pinal Mountain Fire

Oh man that fire looks bad. I have a brother that will probably be visiting there pretty soon. He fights fires with the forest service.

 

I am not sure they are real worried about this fire.

The biggest problem they have is the terrain

since it is hard to access it so fire lines are tough to build.

I have followed the fires pretty close since moving to Payson

but am by no means any kind of expert.

It is in remote country that needs burned and I guess

they are building lines a ways off to stop it if it gets that far.

Sometimes we have to let nature do its thing but if I am off base

Please give more educated input.

I'm a little worried that the FS isn't giving this fire much attention because there is no "harvestable board feet" for timber sales in the area.

CBD, SC and GCT would not allow a harvest to happen, green or charred

Game Hauler is correct that they are managing fires to remove the built up fuels in the area and rejuvenate the vegetation that the wildlife depends on. The other and more important factor is that they manage fires to protect the firefighters lives by building the fire lines where they can safely stop the fire without getting anyone hurt. Of all the large fires going in the Southwest Area, this is the only one that has a incident management team on it, which means it get priority over the other fires for resources.

Look for the fire to expand out to the roads that suround it before it is done..... As over grown as it is, that country needs to burn and I think they plan to manage it in such a fashion.

That sounds like a smart thing to do.

 

I bet I waived to you son on the ride home Sunday late afternoon. Looked like the entire Payson Hotshot crew was sitting along the highway heading to Winkelman watching the burn. They were all resting and sitting up on the top of the crew trucks taking a breather and watching the choppers work the area as smoke bellowed up from the mountain side. It was quite obvious that with the excessive winds they were called out of harms way and there to just wait it out till conditions were optimal for them to go back in and help manage the fire. Hope they return home safely as well all the hot shot crews that will brave some serious issues this summer.

You probably did see him/them... they are night shift right now, but if you saw them on Sunday they got called off the fire mid to late morning.... the choppers came in and hooked some of their gear to lighten the load for the trek out.... they were at the top of one those three tallest peaks. They have been called off the line several times.... and they hate it! The team in charge is doing the right thing by keeping the crews safe, but they (the Hot shots) would rather be up there fighting!

 

Colton says look to see big fire and big smoke tomorrow! Sounds like they are gunna light her up!

Look to the Pinals!!!! They lit it!!! The ping pongs have been runin fo hours.... it is perscibed and in hand (slow burn) but should be a big plume very soon!!! The habitat is really gunna benifit from this one!
