2009 Bull Elk

Recommended Posts

I can't hardly wait for my elk hunt to finally start, so I figured I would get the ball rolling with getting everyones input on what their goals are.

My questions are simple,

*Are you going to hold out for a bigger bull (Final Score) than the one you killed in the past, or shoot whatever presents it self?

*If you are going to hold out for a bigger bull (Final Score), how big and for how long?

*If you are not worried about beating your previous bull, what are you looking to accomplish?

For me, I am looking to kill a higher scoring bull than 300, which is my personal best. I am going to hold out for that bull, for the first week of the hunt. On the second week is when I'll start judging each bull as they come it, depending on what they look like.

With a November archery Bull tag, I am not going to be very picky. A lot depends on what I am seeing prior to the hunt and how the weather plays out (wet or dry). I would like to take a decent bull (300 +) but if a raghorn steps out and presents a shot, I would be hard pressed to pass it up, considering its November (no rut) and my first archery Bull ;)

My wife will hold out for something decent. ( 5 point or better). She already said she won't shoot a spike. My son will probably get buck fever and start shooting at the 1st bull elk he sees. ( It's his 1st bull tag) My daughter will hopefully shoot the 1st cow that stands still long enough for her to get off a clean shot. I wil be holding out for the biggest cow I see and hopefully take 1 shot from my bow.

I have a late rifle bull tag. I took a 380 bull 2 years ago, so I'm not looking for anything smaller. I'm not saying I won't shoot another 380 bull but the goal is something better. I will hold to that until the last day or so and probably would then shoot anything 370 or better. Scouting could change those plans, but with all the moisture we've been getting in my unit, I think it's going to be a great year.

I will hold out for as big an elk as I think I can find in my unit. Last year a 399 bull was killed there. Also, after the season we found a 380+ bull, so I will hunt as hard as I can for a sweet set of horns, but also know that means I may keep my tag in my pocket and I am ok with that. Bull tags are few and far between so I guess I will try to make the most of the ones I can get.

I'll be holding out for a 350 class bull as a minimum on my hunt.. Hoping for a book bull though! Would LOVE to thump a 380+ AZ bull!

I drew the 27 rut muzzleloader tag. We'll see how it unfolds!

Even though this is not my first bull tag in AZ, It could very well be my first bull. Ive been drawn in my favorite unit at my favorite time of year. So well see. last few years while hunting there with friends Ive seen bulls that will make your heart skip a beat. Got my fingers crossed.

I dont want to brag but being drawn in 01 for archery bull, killed a 344 7x7, then drawn again in 03 and killed a 300 6x6 then again in 07 and killed a 330 7x7 non typ, so this year in 09 I will hold out for something huge hopefully 370+++ or go home empty handed, my game room is running out of wall space, plus i need to help 3 others for their first archery kill, before I put my bow in hand. Hopefully we will have a good rut for the archery but not counting on it since the opener keeps getting earlier and earlier. Good luck to everyone

I know, I have been lucky, but I play the draw odds, and I always put in on a full app, I have been drawn more times applying on a full app then just by myself, (for game other than antelope, sheep, or buff,), my partners were drawn for archery bull, in 03, 06, 07, and 09 using the same formula, so it might work you never know. I might make you guys throw up more when I tell you I got drawn for my second, choice, sorry, once again good luck on the hunts

This is my first bull tag, however, may hold out for at least a 5x5 but don't think I'll take a spike.
