Dodger2 Report post Posted May 27, 2009 I'm a fly fisherman by heart and I'm usually wading at Lees Ferry or in my float tube on the white mountain lakes...but I'm taking my 7 year old and my 4 year old fishing to Big Lake/Crescent Lake in two weeks. We have done the powerbait, worms, salmon eggs, etc and had success but the attention span is usually really short so I'm planning on trying trolling...figured could make it a boat ride with a possible incentive if we catch some fish. The kids will be using the old stand-bys until the boredom sets in. I have a boat lined up and have been stocking up on some Panther Martins and Super Dupers, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to troll with these or am I just over thinking this process. I'm also tying up the wooly buggers, Apache Ladys and other white mountain patterns to troll with as well. Do you use weight to get them down into the water column...what about the "cowbells" and "ford fender" things I see people troll with....I've seen them at the store and have no clue on what size to use... jim Report post Posted May 27, 2009 Iwould not suggest the cowbell things as in my opion it takes all the fight out of the fish. If you just troll the spinners and the super dupers you should do fine. Just use good quality swivels. You can also troll the fly's on spinning gear just use split shot to get them down and move slower. You can also put the fly behind a water bobber and let the wind drift you or troll super slow the fish will still come up and eat the fly's. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Rio Report post Posted May 27, 2009 +3 on the advive from jim, if you go with fly's, make sure you have some soft hackle pheasant tails, just put a couple of split shots about 12-16 inches above and as as Jim said slow your troll down. If Cresent is not too weedy, the soft hackle pheasant tail do really well, you could even tie or by bead head softhackle pt. AZ peacock lady's do really also. Good luck, sounds like a great time. 300 wsm Report post Posted June 1, 2009 Also try pistol petes. They are the best thing I have ever used to troll for trout with. They come in all different colors.
