How Would You Proceed

Recommended Posts

For a good sharp image satellite photos of areas you want to check out, go to Yahoo Maps and click on satellite button after you put the cross hairs in the place you want to look at. I found a 20 ft diameter water tank and drinker on the photo that I helped build in the Galiuro's about 20 years ago that I bet will not show up on any maps. ;)

Just do what I do. E scout! Sure you will get some criticism, but you have to have a sense of humor. Here is my favorite method. Sign up as a newbie. make sure it is your first post. Write, "I don't have time to scout but want to know where to hunt in unit so and so. Not looking for trophy areas but a good place to hunt maybe close to a road." Let a bunch of the regulars slam you. Wait for at least ten. Then write back apologizing for bothering everyone and just let slip that the reason you can't scout is you are coming back from your second tour in Afghanistan and you have to spend a few weeks rehabbing in Bethesda MD. getting shrapnel out of your brain and leg and such, but should be ready to go for the hunt. Apologize again for bothering everyone. I guarantee you will not only get specific spots to hunt, you will also get pictures of specific deer with directions to their haunts! As a bonus you will even get some risque pictures of some hunting experts daughter as a possible guide and maybe even some pictures of their wife.

Good luck,

Bob

That's the kind of info I was looking for. Thanks NRS.

I'm not really looking for spots to hunt just how someone would prepare for a new spot prior to going.

Bobbyo you should write a book on E-Scouting. I would buy it.

Go to your local gun/sport shops and ask them about that specific unit, they have maps and also there are some people willing to help. They will tell you where to go. You can even ask the customers of those sport shops.

Also ask some of your friends, or maybe they have a fried that knows that specific unit. Keep knocking doors until you get the answer you are looking for. My two cents.

I love National Geo Topo program. It's like $99 and gives you the entire state at 5 different levels including the 1:24,000 topo maps. You can import and export waypoints into the program which is very handy. You can print any portion of the map you want to (don't have to carry full size topos with you and don't have to buy four topos if your hunt area happens to land in a corner). I think you also get the game management units on CD for about 16 states for free if you buy it at sportsmen's warehouse.

I always use topos to evaluate and plan where I will do on the ground scouting. So if you know what area you want to hunt, get the topos, look them over, call AGFD or check their website for suggested areas and then use the maps to determine where to put your scouting effort.

Bobbyo definitely has it figgured out! The Delorme Topo USA program is pretty simple to navigate and seems to have good detail! We didn't connect on our first coues hunt in 36B last fall but we had a good idea of where we were going and some good places to spend time in. We did see several deer- all does. There's nothing more informative than time in the field and watching what 's going on. We also had some help from a local in the area who took the time to help out a couple of nubies to the coues way. We'll Be Back!!

Does the NatGeo topo show wilderness areas and boundries?

Not that I know of. You might be able to get some kind of add-on layer for that though. I usually have a USFS map of the area and then use topo also. You can draw things into your topo map if you want to add the boundary yourself.
