kphunter Report post Posted May 2, 2005 CHD: Growing up, I was lucky to have a neighbor who took my brother and I fishing. I gave it up during my teenage and college years, but picked it back up in my 30's. Luckily, my wife loves to fish and we've had quite a few great days on the water. I do write about hunting. Check out my website at http://www.kpoutdoors.com and click on the Outdoor Articles link. Thanks, KP KP, I am the world's worst fisherman so I gave up fishin' 20 years ago. Don't even own a rod and reel these days. I just never had the proper instruction, and never seemed to be able to understand the habits and behaviors of fish so that I could regularly whack 'em. I always liked the warm water fish tho, since I grew up in southern New Mexico. I caught catfish, bluegills, carp, a few crappie, and all kinds of trout (cold water fish) when I was a yonker, but nothing that would raise an eyebrow. I saw the NM state record flathead catfish when I was a kid, caught in Elephant Butte Res. Can't remember exactly what it weighed, but it was longer than I was. Once when I was about 8 years old, my Grandpa's friends stopped by with a HUGE amount of catfish from Elephant Butte and the Rio Grande River. I'll never forget that, as they had a TON of cats from little bitty ones up to cats that prolly weighed 30 lbs or so. Wish I had a pic of that. However, I did read thru your article since you made the effort to post it here. Sounds like you definitely know somethin' about crappie fishin'. Got any huntin' articles??? Take care. <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

CHD Report post Posted May 4, 2005 Hey Scott, Thanks for the pics, buddy. They look somewhat familiar, lol. These, evidently, are deep sea creatures that washed ashore after the tsunami in Asia.

bullwidgeon Report post Posted May 4, 2005 Fishing has been good for bass and cats. None of my buddies have been doing any good on crappies though. Maybe this month it will turn around. I need to put down the rods and get my lazy behind up in the hills and start looking for sheds though, but it is so nice to just relax and go fishing. Those freaky deep sea fish are awesome looking and so are those snappers! I bet the snappers were tasty! Bret M.
hunterdude Report post Posted May 4, 2005 CHD, you need to sttay away fromarea 51, or the nuclear waste dump. Those fish are really pretty cool. I have to say a few of them look prehistoric, and a few of them would get shot for coming on board the fishing boat.

I can't wait to get out there after some of those cats!!!!!! Chris, I fully echo wetmule's response to your post. That is some seriously scary 'you know what'!!!!! I was wading & surf casting in Puerto Penasco last month, and got nailed by a sting ray. Hurt like heck, and I thought it was some pretty bad _ss stuff!! Now I know that was total child's play! YIKES!! I'm getting-up to the white mountains for a 4 days next weekend. I can hardly wait!!! S.
creed_az_88 Report post Posted May 4, 2005 My uncle took me to the Gila on the New Mexico side where the fishing is known to be good. We fished all day and only caught one 9-inch channel. The water was running so fast that there wasn't a hole that would hold our bait at the bottom. My whole family always go to the San Francisco above Clifton and we always leave with enough fish to last the rest of the year. The biggest fish we caught last year was a 35 pound flathead that fought for a while. Any of you guys fish this area? creed
cramerhunts Report post Posted May 5, 2005 Creed, About 4-5 years ago I used to fish where the Frisco and Blue meet and would catch alot of 5-10lb. channels but haven't been back since. If you get up in that area let me know how you do. Usually best right after the waters clear up after the run-off ends.
bullwidgeon Report post Posted May 5, 2005 I moved to A.J., not much to do around here but go fishing or drink beer. Mostly I go fishing. I try to stay away from the Turkey . I am 25 minutes from Canyon Lake, Saguaro Lake and the Salt river. That bass is from Canyon lake, there are not very many coues around but a few, there are quite a few more up the famous Apache Trail though. Really there are more desert sheep than anything else it seems like. It is one of the top 3 desert sheep units in the state if you want a real toad. The lake herds are almost tame though, so that's not all that sporting. I am trying to fix up a 21 year old bass boat, when and if I get that off the ground then in a week or two I should be doing alot more fishing. As far as fishing in Greenlee county, I have always wanted to catfish over there and have seen pictures and heard stories of big flatties from the Frsico and Gila over there. Maybe I will try it this summer sometime, I would love to hit the Gila Box between Safford and Morenci sometime, some of those holes look like they just scream "GIGANTE FLATHEAD!". . Bret M.
