packable raingear

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I know it's kind of a funny topic for the desert, but I'm looking to buy some rain gear. Any recommendations out there? Looking for something lightweight, but durable. Been looking at what cabela's has to offer. Any ideas?

I have always just carried a poncho for emergencies.

I got a set of Frog Togg from Sportsmans warehouse for about $50. Has been the best set I have owned. They also work really well on those late hunts because they seem to hold in the heat pretty well for a light layer.

+1 for Frog Toggs! Best I have found for our heavy down poors of summer!

I am not familar with that brand... tell us more, is it like a storm cloth or like plastic? My raingear gave up the ghost this year and I, too need something new and packable. Pics??

Thanks!

I use Browning Pack-lite gear and really like it. It has served me well on many archery elk and late coues hunts. It has held up really well, never leaked, and weighs next to nothing....down side is that it's a bit pricey but I believe in buying something once.

For light and packable and reasonably inexpensive, look at the Marmot Precip jacket.

More $ would be the Integral Designs eVENT Rain Jacket.

I would consider having pit zips in the jacket to help shed some heat and body moisture, although they say with e-vent none are needed.

I got a super-cheapo from old-navy on clearance that fits in its own pocket - picked up about 4 for around $5 each. Can't beat 'em for the price. Just a nylon shell, but hey out here that's all we need.

Here is what I have used last couple of years. I have the jacket and pants. They roll up pretty compact (about the size of a couple of potatoes each). They breath decent and I usually have em with me. They have saved my butt a couple of times. A hutning partner and I really like them. Cabelas in town has them in stock if you wanna check em out.

+1 on the poncho, the ones that have their own pocket are great; perfect for those 'it doesn't look like rain this morning' days...

Here is one more to look at.

It weights 22oz! I usually wear it under my leafy wear. I have used it by its self. I havn't had any problems with it ripping, and if it does you can sent it back to them. I feel its very quiet. and for around $60, its not to bad and fits almost anywhere you want to put it!

I purchased some of cabela's packable raingear last year for a moose hunt in Alaska. It was a bit pricey, but I get cold easy and wanted decent quality. They were quiet and I ended up wearing them most of the hunt because it was so wet up there. They worked well and although sometimes felt like they were retaining water, I never really got wet underneath. I don't remember the exact model? :)

I would like to find something that works as rain gear as well as wind breaker. I have a polar fleece Pull over that is very warm. I would like something that compacts down small and very lite weight. I will be using my badlands diablo this year and not my badlands 2200. So space saving is a big thing. have always been into liet weight. I have taken a few years to put together my gear so this will have to fit the bill just right. The ones that roll into the small mesh bag just might be what i am looking for. As long as they will fight the wind.
