San Juan River, New mexico

Recommended Posts

After I got to the far side of the river, I had the best day's fishing in yellowstone I ever had, caught over 20 nice cutthroat. I found a long stick to use as a wading pole/brace to get back across the river. The water was up to within a couple inches of the top of my chest waders. I felt almost like a big bobber.

It has been years since I have really fished with passion but I personally think the Juan is one of the most dangerous rivers in the country.. Those big old Moss covered Limestone rocks are crazy slippery... You see those big flat spots and you think you can walk across them quickly and then BAM.... You bust your butt.... I had a buddy chip his elbow in the Kiddy Flats and just about blew my knee out in Lunker Ally...

I used to guide at Chama Land and Cattle or the Lodge at Chama... on Private lakes... When our clients wanted to do some river fishing we would run to the SJ. So we when we were on the river we were guiding for Rainbow Lodge but that is when Gary used to own it... I haven't heard from him in years but last I heard he sold the operation... it was alot of fun but the crowds get real old real fast. The river is pretty technical and tough but when you hit it right it is nuts.... i have had 50 fish days on the river....

I have been baptised in the waters of the San Juan by stepping into a moss covered hole. My wife said it is one of the funniest things she has seen. All she saw was a flyrod and part of an arm sticking out of the water. :D

Sorry Jackshoe, didn't mean to hijack your thread! :)
