accidental shooting on turkey hunt?

Recommended Posts

On the first day of turkey season, an overzealous hunter shot his partner multiple times in the side and face.

Brian Hedger and Stephen Katich were hunting turkey on Friday, the opening day for their unit, on a ridge near Forest Road 109, which is south of Highway 260 and Valentine Ridge, said Gila County Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Scott.

Katich reportedly took aim and shot what he thought was a turkey, striking Hedger numerous times with shotgun pellets on the left side of his body and face, Scott said.

None of the wounds are life threatening, he said.

“Hedger called out that he had been shot and Katich immediately went over to render aid,” Scott said.

“Katich assisted Hedger out to his vehicle where Hedger called 911 to report what happened and started driving himself toward Payson for medical treatment.”

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office received the call from Hedger and called the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and Arizona Game and Fish for assistance locating Hedger.

Hedger drove himself out and met Forest Lakes Fire at the intersection of Forest Road 512 and Highway 260.

Gila County deputies along with Forest Service Law Enforcement and Game and Fish arrived a few minutes after Hedger arrived at the highway.

Hedger was transported to Payson Regional Medical Center for treatment while deputies waited for Katich to arrive.

Authorities interviewed Katich, who explained what happened. Katich’s story matched with Hedger’s, Scott said. Katich then drove to Payson to check on the condition of Hedger.

An investigation is continuing, but no decision has been made if charges will be filed.

Isn't the rule during the spring hunt a bearded turkey, I don't want the beard and the guy was a turkey jokes, but how in the heck could you shoot a person when you have to make sure you are shooting a legal turkey. Now if the guy was carrying a decoy of a tom right in front of his face maybe, I wonder how far away he was, it says he was shot multiple times, was that multiple pellets or did he shoot more than once.

I don't get that either. I just can't fathom someone accidentally shooting someone else, unless an animal was directly between the hunter and shooter and the shooter did not know he was there? Another thing is why did his friend send him to the hospital by himself, was it a minor wound?

Accidents Happen and glad no one was seriously hurt.

The accuratereloading.com website has a thread that tells about Craig Boddington's daughter shooting a tracker who was on the ground, being mauled by a leopard last week. Because of the tall grass, she did not know the man was under the cat. She shot after her PH did when she saw the leopard moving a couple of yards in front of her. Luckily for the man, the bullet passed through the fleshy part of his hip without striking bone. He lost a lot of blood, but he lived to reach a hospital where he is reported to be doing well. He is expected to return to hunting before the end of the season.

Bill,

I read that on AR. The charge and shot seemed to happen very quickly (3 sec?) as told by the police reports and video time.

I am glad that it wasn't a serious injury as well, it just makes you think how that could happen.

I agree if it is an animal charging or attacking the situation changes, but I would put turkey attack way low on Arizona big game dangers, not saying they couldn't do a little damage, but if my buddy was getting his tail kicked by a turkey the last thing I would do would be to spray the bird and him with a shotgun, a video camera and America's funniest home videos would probably be worth the turkey fight.

Curious why Katich did not accompany or drive Hedger out in the vehicle.

I thought the same thing. I always thought it was an unwritten rule that when someone accidently shoots someone else in the face the shooter is honor bound to drive the shootee to the hospital. But maybe that's just the guys I hunt with. Or maybe the turkeys were really gobbling. I don't know. Sure is odd though.
