It's a great idea!! We need more opportunities like this to engage our kids into hunting. What I don't understand, why not mandatory kill reporting reporting like OTC deer? As usual, G&F is inconsistent and confused.

Inconsistent and confused is one way to desribe it. I lean more toward shady and greedy. As far as OTC youth tags, I think it is great. Mandatory harvest reporting would be a great managment tool. If the kids start wackin and stackin then adjust the draw tags accordingly. I think they should do the same with deer. Not OTC but load up the Juniors and cut the Adults cause AZGFD doesn't give a rats butt about proper managment anyhow.

I love the OTC youth tags. Like many here, I'd give up my tags altogether if that's what it took to get the kids out there. I've got a 3C tag this year but it's staying on the back burner until my boys get their chance (1 down, 1 to go )

 

From a management perspective, I totally agree that mandatory reporting is essential to make sure we don't over-harvest and that adjustments can be made if necessary.

OMG!!!

 

I am sorry but I Gotta say this! I would give up spring turkey hunting in this state for the rest of my life if they keep letting the kids hunt OTC!!!!! I can easilly hunt in other states for birds, but for a family to travel out of state for a dangged old yard bird would be out of reach for most. It blows me away when adults have a "Me, Me, Me!" attitude vs. their kids or any kids!!! Youth turkey and pig hunts are the very best kids programs out there IMO.... Every turkey and pig taken by kids is a trophy and there is no adult ego's involved in harvesting pigs and turkeys! These are low stress hunts that have high impact on the future hunters! This OTC deal is one of the finest progams I have seen AZGF ever do for our kids and although my boys are to old to benifit from it I still love it! The success rate for these kids is fairly low, like Terry said about 25% in camp, but I know of atleast a half dozen more that struck out on birds this weekend as well.... So I don't think they slaughtered the population by any means... Any adult that would feel wounded by kids have the first crack at all the birds is just being selfish...IMO. There is a big difference between buying a tag and ground checking a bird.... but a Grand Time was had by every kid that went out as best as I have heard!! That is Priceless!!!

Nice pics Terry!!!!!! Nice seeing you briefly this weekend as well.....

 

My boys & I gave it our best, but we couldn't quite bring it together for a kill! Heard gobblers, chased some, and had some close calls. All around GREAT time!!!! Sorry we didn't make it back to the camp, but we were really hunting hard and just didn't make the time to drive all that way back there.

 

Glad some of the kids had success!!!!

I also like the idea of the OTC youth tags. I would also like to see mandatory reporting not just for these tags but for all tags. I had some friends that took their kids to 3C and they did say that opening day between Heber and Show Low was a zoo. But after opening day the pressure decreased dramatically with only a few hunter seen after that. All I know is that where we were hunting, we had it all too ourselves.

As far as Im concerned, the only reason an adult goes turkey hunting (or pig hunting for that matter) is because it gives them an excuse to get outside. Nothing wrong with that.....but personally for me, I havent even applied for a turkey tag in years. Ive killed many turkeys when I was younger as well as pigs, but IMHO, thats what those hunts are geared for. I mean really.....how many beards or skulls does one really need. And if your doin it for the meat, it doesnt feed for long. Im all for the kids reeking havok!!!!!!

Spring turkey hunting is up there with anything else IMO. Trying to outwit a bird to do what is unnatural takes some skill and smarts. No easier than a dumb bull or buck during the rut.

. Gobblers instictivly gobble to attract hens to them, it's not natural for the gobblers to seek out a hen. And no, it's no easier. Most animals get a case of the dumbass when chasing tail , humans not excluded.
