deserthntr Report post Posted April 19, 2009 oops i meant 2 not @ opening morning birds. well me and my buddy had our junior tags so me and my uncle went up thursday morning and found some birds, and put them to bed. since it was my friends first turk hunt i let him go to the bigger bird and that was closer to camp. me and my uncle took off while my dad and my friend went together. we were on a ridge and heard gobblers way across the canyon and over a few ridges so i made the call to head over there. we set up on a gullie and the birds were on the next ridge even tho they sounded like they were on the one closest to us. so while my uncle was calling i went to get closer and try to call one of the gobblers in. well out of no where a jake gobbled 100 yards away. i stopped in mid-stride and when he went into strut i put my foot down. he caught it like that and was out of there. i went to my uncle and we decided to keep calling if one came in the others might also. about 20 minutes later i caught a head moving and when it went behind a tree i raised the gun. he came out and i was looking for a beard, at about 20 yards i could see it well enough i was comfortable shooting and that i wasnt hallucinateing things, so i put the bead on his neck and let it go. he flipped backwards and we yelled and ran up and i grabbed him by his neck and we had him. he only had about a 6 in. beard, my smallest of my three birds, and tiny spurs. my friend got a bird with about a 9 inch beard so it was a great first bird for him and it had probably 1/2 inch spurs. i was so excited for him. and 2 hours into the hunt we were both done for the season. i had to pack mine over the shoulder for about a mile so not to bad and my dad packed my friends about 500 yards. it was great. i will post pics when i get them loaded onto my laptop. we got some great photos of all of us. jim Report post Posted April 21, 2009 You should be real proud of yourself for letting your buddy have the biggest bird. Theres alot of adults out there that could learn something from your actions. You are a class act.
