Non-Typical Solutions Report post Posted April 13, 2009 Anybody got any quick hints on locating turkey? I have heard howling, crow caw and stuff like that after the sun goes down will get them to gobble in the roost. Any truth to that notion?
Rio Report post Posted April 13, 2009 If they've started to gobble heavy, they'll respond to just about any sound, even a car door closing. You can use owl and crow calls, they're a little more natural sound, evenings are a good time, if you can locate and roost them, you'll have your starting point for the next morning. Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted April 14, 2009 As mentioned the truck door can work well..... ... Also, I was out yesterday and drove up on a group of birds in my Ranger with the tunes blaring and those toms we gobbling thier danged old heads off! On a more serious note I have heard that a owl hooter works good.... You can't hardly tell but these two toms were a struttin' and a gobllin'!

The peacock screamer is one of the best locator calls in my experience. Last year a buddy was using one and would get birds to gobble that I could not day or night. I made sure I would have one in my vest this year!!!!

ac guy Report post Posted April 14, 2009 I've always used an owl, but you guys got me thinkin about stopping by and picking up a peacock. I watched a show once where they were hunting near the Mississippi, and used an air horn for a locater. Damnedest thing I ever saw.
Non-Typical Solutions Report post Posted April 14, 2009 I have an air horn sitting right here on my desk......can't say I have every paid attention to a peacock screamer...I had my calls out in the livingroom last night had my wife and my dog both about ready to chase me out of the house....guess I better step outside to practice tonight. Thanks guys, what about 1:00 in the morning.....does the same hold true as far as them gobbling up on the roost??
AZbowhntr Report post Posted April 14, 2009 Redneck, I hear you. The last turkey tag I had my wife and daughters were ready to kick me out of the house. I used to drive about 30 minutes to and from work and started practicing while I drove. Apparently it worked because I got a turkey the very first time a went out. I have always used a crow call with pretty good success.
