Any advice on hunting elk during the rut would be greatly appreciated. Should I look for a good water hole, try calling, maybe a little of both??? Thanks in advance for your help. BowNut Report post Posted April 12, 2009 Thats the tag I have put for first choice for 6 years now with no luck. If you do not know what to do I will take it! You probably will not be able to find water with out someone on it unless it pours rain the first couple of days like last year. Good Luck.
300 wsm Report post Posted April 12, 2009 Listen for screams and go get them. They are a blast to hunt. Dont over call. I only use a bugle to locate bulls. Dont only go after herd bulls for some of your biggest bulls are satelite bulls.
deserthntr Report post Posted April 12, 2009 definately practice your calling, really all you need is a couple cow calls, elk is my thing as i have been stat elk calling champ of az twice and idaho once (only tried idaho once and ended up winning) anyways i have locatd bulls with just cow calling, but this is just basic info you probably know but when you use your bugl make it weak and light, nothing heavy, you may think it will get the big bulls you want to bugle, but if you sound bigger than them they will get their cows and get out of there. go to the rmef seminar, usually in august, check out their website when it gets closer and go to it, it will help big time

elkaholic Report post Posted April 14, 2009 hello - probably just me - I relate chasing a scream( bull elk bugle ), to chasing a dream - It's right there so close you can reach out and touch it. but no matter what you try to do it's right in front of you and then its gone. Wait - now its in the opposite direction - hurry! hurry!it's getting louder -Im getting closer with every step. I know i'm gonna see something - a glimps anything - wait - where did it go ? it's stopped agin - wait now i hear one over that way - No wait - it's coming from over there - no - now i hear it comimg from 2-3 different ways - AHHHHH - you start to break out in a cold sweat - whats real anymore - what do i do ! - Chasing a screaming bull is not always successful - try not to get lost chasing a dream !! good luck on your hunt I'd hunt n/w of parks and behind the deer farm! Red Rabbit Report post Posted April 14, 2009 Get out a few hours before daylight and listen for bugles. Spend the morning cow calling and chasing. Get a few DVD on elk vocalizations. I think the elk can recognize a Hoochie Mama now Sit a wallow mid day (don't lounge in camp). If you can find an unhunted water hole for the evening, great- otherswise try a trail leading to water but get far enough away that another hunter does not feel you are cutting him off. Congrats on your tag and have great fun on your first archery elk hunt.
