Ideas on where to camp

Recommended Posts

Hey guys my girlfriend and I drew unit 27 turkey tags, and I dont have to much knowledge of this unit. I havent been able to get up there at all due to work, school, and buying a very time consuming house. Im looking for any suggestion on some possible camping sites.

Thanks in advance......Cody

OK, I will jump in here, I have been in the same boat and needed help.

27 is a pretty big unit so lets get it out in the open if you have any ideas where you think you want to hunt.

Any of those roads cutting through towards middle mountain, diamond rock, buffalo crossing a guy can pull off and pitch a tent.

Along 666 there is stray horse, and spots like that.

If you dive off red hill road to the east off 666 there is all sorts of room for throwing a tent.

If you want a shower and bathroom......motel in Alpine

FYI.... 666 is no longer 666, it's 191, so if you're looking on your map (unless it's from about 1995) you won't see 666 anywhere.

My favorite place to camp is off of the road to sawed off mountain. Cool camp spot about 1/4 mile in on the right. (sawed off is to the East of 191) I believe the road is FS82 or something like that.

Good luck!

Dang it Tyler, you made that too easy, I was hoping for the next question...you know....I can't find 666 on the map and at least I would know he was looking at a map.

Lots or room for camping off of beaverhead as well.............

More important is.;....where are the turkey :o

Are you looking for primitive or developed camping? Do you have a trailer or camper, or will it be tent camping?

Man all this 666 talk is starting to make me re-think even going!!!! hahaha ya right. We will be camping in a tent and i have a 4x4 truck, so rough roads are ok. Not only is this my first time hunting this unit, its also my first time hunting turkey so the " where are the turkeys" question is the next one i will have to figure out. Thanks for the suggestions, any others are welcome.

As far as 'where are the turkeys.....', I would say that you should try to get to the unit a day early (at least....). Listen down into drainages & canyons in the morning & evening for gobblers sounding-off! That's going to be the easiest way to get a bead on their general where-abouts!

Good luck novice!!! Basics; Lots of good camo, NO movement when you're on a stand/set-up, and DON'T call too much! Less can be 'more'..... Listen to the woods.....

I'm generally a novice also, and I'm finding spring turkey hunting to be GREAT fun!!
