A few weeks ago I bought a Johny Stewart E-Call. I've gone out 5 or 6 times and made 5-10 sets each time. I've only seen one coyote, I wasn't able to get a shot. I've been hunting East of Phoenix. I've been very suprised to there hasn't been much Coyote sign in most of the places. I'm starting to get really frustrated. I want to call in a coyote really bad, but aparently I'm in the wrong place or I'm doing something really wrong. I'm using sent eliminator spray, a decoy and really good camo. I know this is a very open ended question, but I was wondering if there is anyone out there that would be willing to take me out and show me a few pointers and maybe put me on a dog or two. Thanks Adam

I would contact the Phoenix Varmit Callers and see if they have a club member willing to go out with you to help find some good spots and get more successful. Sounds to me like you just need to find a spot with more coyotes since it seems you are doing everything else right.

If you can't find a contact on their website, try calling Chris Hastie. I just spoke with him this weekend and I bet he could help you out.

Adam- Right now is a tough time to be calling. The coyotes are breeding, and its warming up the coyotes are educated. It is difficult time to call. The best advice I can give you is wait until October and start calling again. There will be a bunch of young dumb pups (no longer pups by October) out that are easy to call. Watch the wind and look for sign (scat, tracks etc.). Where there is lots of sign there are coyotes to be called. I usually call from October to March and my success rate goes down throughout the season because less coyotes and they have been shot at more. If you wait until Mid- October your calling should be much more productive than now. Good Luck!

But if you really want to call a coyote in this time of the year I would try pup in distress sounds.

I agree with SHOOTER, coyotes are taking care or their pups now and they are not very responsive to the calls.

Also right now and for now on until it gets cold again, food is more abundant or available to them that when it gets cold so with a full belly is hard to call them since they are not that hungry anymore.

It is important that when you call always keep the wind in your face. Another thing is that if you want to call this time of the year is best to call the north side of the hills or mountains since they are cooler than the southside; that's where the coyotes will be specially if they have pups.

This is a tough time to call them up but it's also important to try as the fawn drop is here or nearing- less yotes means higher fawn survival :o

I agree with the above posts to a certain exstent... However, coyotes are still coming in to calls, so keep on trying if you do not want to wait untill next fall. I would also mix up the locations of your calling.

Good luck.

p.s. try some coyote vocalizations this time of year. ie female invitation, male challenge, and pup in distress should all pay off about now.

i agree with every one. you could check out arizona predator callers, they are in mesa, check out there website, i know there are people who will take you out, call craig, the pres, or mike burris. they are great callers. and will know where to go, try down by globe, i have always had luck down there, but use pup in distress for sure, i will garrantee you will call one in sooner or later wth that one. but the best thing is to not get frustrated. it took me probably 15 trip to call one in. just takes time and practice
