bowsniper Report post Posted March 14, 2005 I could use some suggestions on good places to take my family camping in the lower elevations. I know a lot of good places up North for Summer camping, but we want to go out next week for a few days to enjoy the green desert. I don't mind 2 or 3 hours out of Phoenix, and some 4wd is ok, although more than an hour of it the kids usually get car sick. I would prefer somewhere without a lot of people. Thanks a bunch for any suggestions! Bowsniper
coues addict Report post Posted March 14, 2005 Bowsniper I used to hunt Date creek and I would think it is beautiful right now. I also like the kofa game range and I know it has been hammered with rain lately! its a cool place to go because there are quit a few desert bighorn sheep! You can pretty much use your Coues glassing setup to find and locate them. I think the kofa will be around a two and a half or three hour drive but the weather should be really nice! It is awesome low desert country. I hope you have fun wherever you decide! Coues Addict
KGAINES Report post Posted March 15, 2005 You can also try near seven springs or go down towards horshoe lake and find a spot close to the river, I think the water is still running to fast to cross, so sheeps crossing would probably not be a good place to go even though there are a few ways in the river has probably damaged a lot of the surrounding area. I seen that you mentioned 2 to 3 hours, you could get to a whole lot of the state in that amount of time, the places that I mentioned are really close to the valley, a little further and you could get to the verde rim, Crown King, or any number of places. I went to Yuma today and there were flowers along the road the whole way, so you know that the further you get from the road the nicer it will be. Good luck finding a spot I wish I could be of more help, I am sure there will be quite a few suggestions from the rest of these guys.
rugerman Report post Posted March 15, 2005 I went camping around seven springs this weekend and it was perfect weather. The best part was when I heard my dog barking and when i went over he was toe to toe with a 2 ft Gila monster. very cool, we had the digital camera and got some great shots. we were up date creek the last weekend of quail and that was extremely pleasant also
bowsniper Report post Posted March 15, 2005 Thanks for the suggestions. Hey Coues Addict, how are the roads through Kofa? Can you get around pretty easy, dirt with some 4WD, or is it a lot of 4WD? Thanks!
Guest Ernesto C Report post Posted March 15, 2005 Bowsniper,in the flats you can get around pretty easy but if you want to get deep in to the canyons or get from King Valley to Castle Dome Plains or some areas around Hodo Wells yea you'll need 4WD. If you want to take your family to Palm Canyon or Cristal Hill you'll only need a high clearance vehicle. If you get to go to Kofas, stay on the road(s) dont go off roading, camp withing 100 ft from the roads and make sure you dont do any target practicing with your gun or you may get some problems.......You can pick up the Kofa regulations an the main entrys of the Refuge. Wheater shoul be in the mid to high 70's the next five or so days....God bless. Ernesto C.
coues addict Report post Posted March 17, 2005 Bowsniper Ernesto pretty much hit the nail on the head! The Kofa does not allow off road travel at all. We mostly hike into the deep canyons and the high vantage points. The desert is super green right now and I think you would have an awesome time, with nice camping weather too! good luck Coues Addict
